Is My Favorite Baby Name Too Weird?

I've been having a love affair with the name Calypso since I was 16 years old! I love the name, I love the sound, I love the Greek mythology, and I love the nickname Caly to go with it. My husband also loves the name, but neither of us are sure if we should use it. We aren't sure how our families, or friends, or anyone else will react to this name! Do we take a chance? Or should we be looking elsewhere with these doubts? - Calypso Lover

You want to know how people will react to the name? I have two syllables for you: Day-O. A typical person who hears Calypso is more likely to think "Harry Belafonte" than "Greek nymph."

Similarly, if you're wondering if your favorite name is too evil, you have to spell it out. Because when it comes to names, bad is sometimes bad, sometimes good, and sometimes downright cruelty to children. It all depends on the individual name.

Dear Name Lady: We have a very common last name, so we don't want to choose a name for our baby girl that is too common. We've ruled out the current top 25 names. But there are a lot of names that we like (e.g., Annabelle and Eva) that are in the top 100s now and seem to be rising in popularity. Do you have any suggestions -- either of specific names or general trends to look out for -- on how to avoid choosing a name that will top of the charts in a few years? - Jane

A lot of parents today suffer from "name acrophobia" -- the fear that their favorite baby name will climb to the dizzying top of the popularity charts. Is there any surefire way to avoid picking the next Jacob or Emma?

New Baby Alert: Sebastian Thomas Hilfiger

New Baby Alert: Sebastian Thomas Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger welcomed a baby boy,  Sebastian Thomas Hilfiger, into the world today.  And so designers are just like us -- they have babies too.  But perhaps better clothed ones.  Will Sebastian go through the well-worn tradition of little siblings:  the hand-me-down cascade?  Or does being Hilfiger's son mean new clothes each season?  Either way, this baby will no doubt be well-attired.

Tommy's not new to the baby or naming business.
