It’s been a while since we were assigned to read The Great Gatsby, but with the 3D extravaganza new in theaters over the weekend, we decided to revisit names from the book. The novel is set in 1922 and with all the buzz on old-timey names, it’s interesting to see just how these names are doing and if any are due for a comeback.

Punk isn't dead--at least not in the celebrity world. Last week's Met Ball, which heralded the opening of the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, brought celebrities by the dozen to New York's red carpet. Fashion's hottest party even had its fair share of pregnant stars paying tribute to the punk theme: Alec Baldwin's wife Hilaria Thomas, and, of course, Kim Kardashian. When these moms-to-be are thinking baby names, will they be inspired by the gala--and the cultural scene to which it was dedicated?

From names as famous as Spock to Jean-Luc Picard, you don't have to be a Trekkie to enjoy the wealth of interesting names the Star Trek franchise has spawned over the years. With the release of Star Trek Into Darkness this week, we couldn't help but consider the rise of the name Kirk, from the hero of the initial series and the current reboot, James Tiberius Kirk, as well as some of the other unique characters.

When we last checked in with Kate Hudson and her fiance Matthew Bellamy, the celebrity couple had just revealed the family connections behind their new son's name. "For those wondering" aboutBingham "Bing" Hawn Bellamy's name, Matthew tweeted, "Bingham is my mum's maiden name and Bing Russell was Kurt's dad. Family connections all round!" Now that Bing is almost two years old, though, Kate jokes that his name has taken on a very different meaning.

CNN reported on the list of names that have been rejected by the New Zealand Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages since 2001. New Zealand parents aren't allowed to give their kids certain kinds of names, like official titles, single letters, numbers, or words that might be offensive. And the names they’ve banned are some that most name enthusiasts in the US only wish they could strike down. But a few of the names are actually in use by celebs we know.

Actor Ian Ziering (who will always be Steve Sanders to us) is a dad again, reports PEOPLE. This time around he and his wife, Erin, went with an unusual choice for the first name and a more trendy middle. The two-time parents chose the name Mia Loren for their first daughter, but for the newest addition they picked a name so rare it’s never even been in the top 1000.

Actress Poppy Montgomery is a mom again, this time to a baby girl, with finace Shawn Sanford. Continuing a colorful family tradition, Montgomery has chosen a flower-inspired name for her new daughter - Violet Grace Devereux Sanford. 

Swedish-Canadian actress Malin Akerman and husband, musician Roberto Zincone welcomed a son this week. The former bandmates announced their new arrival via Tweet. Their son is named Sebastian Zincone and was born on April 16.

Grammy Award-winning singer Michael Buble appeared on The Graham Norton Show recently to discuss his wife's taste in baby names. The couple, who wed in 2011, announced last month that they're expecting a boy--but they still haven't agreed on a boy name. Michael joked of wife Luisana Lopilato's suggestions, "She's killing me. She's Argentinian, so we fight about the names. She thinks of names that sound beautiful in Spanish...she'll say to me, 'You know what is a good name, Mike? Dirt. Dirt Buble.' I'll say, 'You know, I don't think Dirt means what you think it means,' and she'll say, 'No, it's beautiful, in Spanish it sounds so good!'"
