Al Harrington of the New York Knicks and his wife Michelle welcomed their first child this week. The pair named their baby girl Amaya.  We love the baby name Amaya and were surprised that we couldn't think of a single other celebrity who had already named their baby Amaya. But watch out! With Maya and Mia already dominating both the popularity charts (Maya rose sharply this decade to number 85  on the Social Security Administration's list of top 1000 names and Mia climbed as high as number 13 in 2006) and the celebrity baby ranks (NameCandy.com lists five celebrity babies named Maya and another five celebrity babies named Mia), Amaya, which is currently ranked at number 198 and  recently broke the top-100 list in frontier naming outpost Montana is likely to take off even more now.

After all, the name Amaya has that special combination of familiar and loved sounds and freshness that our own Name Lady warns us is a recipe for future trendiness.  But really, what's not to love about the name Amaya? Amaya is a great choice for those with an international bent (like jet-setting celebs). According to Laura Wattenberg's Baby Name Wizard book, Amaya has roots both in Spanish (a Basque surname) and in Japanese.

What do you think? Is Amaya poised for a sharp rise?

Amaya is beautiful. Its Japanese and means "night rain." I also like the Basque Amaia which means "end."
