Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie Announces Baby Girl's Name
Bret McKenzie, one half of the New Zealand band/comedy duo The Flight of the Conchords has revealed the name of his baby girl, born in August. Bret's baby girl, with wife Hannah, is named Vita, from the Latin, meaning "life." Back in September, we predicted that the name Vita had all the makings of a hit, after David Boreanaz chose Vita as a middle name for his baby girl, Bardot.
In addition to the Latin derivation, which makes Vita a good choice for families honoring a Spanish or Italian heritage, the name Vita has been out of fashion long enough to sound fresh again (see Vita in NameVoyager) and fits in well with the recent spate of Vi- names trending up (see Vivienne Jolie-Pitt and Violet Affleck, for example.)
We must admit, we are very impressed with Bret's naming panache. Bret's Flight of the Conchords partner Jemaine Clement named his son Sophocles last year, a more far-out choice. And with the name McKenzie uber-popular as a first name choice for girls over the past decade, we could imagine a joke-like sceanrio in which Bret's baby ended up being named McKenzie McKenzie. And that wouldn't have been so funny.
You can read more about Bret McKenzie's new baby and the Flight of the Conchords at Celebrity Baby Blog and in the New Zealand Herald.
Do you have any thoughts on the names Vita or Sophocles? If you're a Flight of the Cochords fan, can you imagine these names getting incorporated into future songs?

I went to school with a Sophocles and he made it seem cool. I think it helps to have a big personality.
I think Vita is a sweet nickname for Victoria (as in Victoria "Vita" Sackville-West... who had an affair with Virginia Woolf). I like it. It DOES sound fresh. In general, though, I think I prefer Vida. As an academic, "Vita" makes me think of resume (curriculum vita).
