Celebrity and Movie Names for Christmastime Babies

Looking for a movie or celebrity-inspired Christmas name choice for your December babe? Sure, you could go with Holly (as in Golightly) or Noel (as in Gallagher). But we have some different (and perhaps more offbeat) ideas:

Emmanuelle: You know Emmy Rossum (pictured), the actor and singer and dater of Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz? Well, her full name is Emmanuelle Grey Rossum. It's the feminine form of Emmanuel, the Hebrew for "God with us" and a name for Jesus or Messiah. (See the Name Lady's recent column on Messiah.) It's also the middle name of Cameron Mathison's daughter, Leila.

Bailey: One of the perennially well-loved Christmas movies is It's a Wonderful Life, in which Jimmy Stewart plays George Bailey, the man who discovers how blessed he is in friends and family though he begins the movie on the brink of financial ruin. You could certainly go with George (which we think could become more popular, a la Henry), but Bailey has found a following lately as a name for both boys and girls. (Click here to see celebrity babies named Bailey.)

Parker: Another Christmas favorite, A Christmas Story, features a young, bespectacled protaganist by the name of Ralphie. While Ralphie and his younger brother, Randy, may be a hard sell as namesakes today, what about their last name, Parker? (You can see celebrities who've picked the name here.)

Cornelia: Okay, so it would be hard to argue that Santa Claus: The Movie, a mid-eighties flick featuring Dudley Moore as a capitalism-loving elf and John Lithgow as an unscrupulous toymaker, is as well-loved or as, well, classic as the other movies we've mentioned. But it does feature some great names. Mrs. Claus is named Anya, while the young heroine of the movie is called Cornelia. Cornelia -- popular in the nineteenth century -- has not yet made its way back onto the charts in the US, but it's moving up in Sweden and Norway. Bonus: the possible nickname Nell (chosen by Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton for their daughter).

Bonus fun fact: the actress who played Cornelia has a blog. Click here to read her comments on Santa Claus: The Movie.

Clara: Clara is, in many versions, the heroine of The Nutcracker, as well as the girl Heidi teaches to walk in Heidi. (The Shirley Temple version is another holiday favorite.) Ewan McGregor has a daughter named Clara Mathilde. How is this name not more popular?

What do you like? What would you add?

I'd add elf-related names, and you can take your pick of famous actors and actresses who wear them as first or last names:

Avery
Aubrey

as the mother of a Sarah, Clara is also one of my favorites (since it's the same name sound)... i don't know how it's not more popular. and cornelia isn't on my top list, but cordelia isn't bad.

Thanks for the Cornelia shout-out! I always thought "Neelie" would be a good nickname (unlike Joe's choice of "Corny" in the movie)...

And yes, Cordelia is more popular, with the Buffy/Angel and King Lear characters and all, but I think Cornelia has untapped potential.
