Matthew McConaughey Names Baby Girl Vida

Matthew McConaughey and girlfriend Camila Alves welcomed a baby girl on Sunday January 3, 2010. The new baby's name is Vida Alves McConaughey and joins older brother Levi, 17 months. (like his new baby sister, Levi's middle name is also mom's maiden name, Alves)

In addition to sporting mom's maiden name as a middle name, the new baby's first name is drawn from mom's Brazilian heritage. In a post on his Web site, MatthewMcConaughey wrote of the new baby girl's name: "Vida is Portuguese for 'life' and that's what God gave us today."

Here at NameCandy.com, we've written extensively in recent months about the name Vita, the Italian variant of Vida, whose origins and sound are nearly identical. After Vita was chosen as a middle name by David Boreanaz for his baby girl born in August (her first name is Bardot), we wrote

"Vita...has all the makings of a hit.  It derives from the Latin meaning "life," a nice nod to dad's Italian heritage, has been out of fashion long enough to sound fresh again (see Vita in NameVoyager) and fits in well with the recent spate of Vi- names trending up (see Vivienne Jolie-Pitt and Violet Affleck, for example."

Not long afterward, we learned that Bret McKenzie of the Flight of the Conchords, had also chosen the name Vita for his baby girl .

What do you think of the name Vida?  Do you think it is a good match for sibling name Levi, which is also four letters and shares two primary sounds (V and I)?

I think I like Vida better than Vita, it looks a little more feminine and softer. Love the meaning. Think it's a great coupling with Levi.

I think the meaning is great but the sounds are too close together for me.

I'm a big fan of the name Vida. But I wonder, do Brazilians also name baby girls Vida? Or is this like someone who speaks Portuguese taking the English word "Life" and choosing to use it as a name? Anyone know?

I too like Vida better than Vita. Vita makes me think of Lucy Ricardo and the Vitameatavegamin commercial.

As a Brazilian I can say 'Vida' is NOT a common name in Brasil, actually it’s not even a name here. I have never heard about somebody named Vida here and I really doubt that a Brazilian parent would name their daughter Vida. That would be equivalent to someone in the U.S.A. named a baby girl "Life"!

(And I’m sorry my English is not good)

As the names Vida and Vita are becoming more acknowledged, so should the name Vika (Vee-ka). Vika is a short form of Victoria and is a common Russian name. I named my daughter Viktoria born 2 months ago but we are planning to register her in schools as Vika to ensure that she will not be called Vicki or Tori. I think it is a beautiful variant of Victoria, as well as unique and strong. Americans seem to really like this name and it would be nice if more people were aware of it so as to have more choices when naming their daughters. I also think that Victoria is a beautiful name but many people stay away from it to avoid the nick name Vicky. Hopefully Vika can be a choice that parents can be happy with as a nick name, and again it is original without being over the top. Lastly, we replaced the "C" with a "K" in her full name "Viktoria" to give more precedence to her nick name "Vika".

Three top devices to come out of 2012 are the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4. All handsets became best-selling devices and they remain just as popular in 2013 while we wait for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One to come out.
The LG Nexus 4 offers the quad core processor which was clocked at 1.5GHz. The Apple iPhone 5 offers the dual core processor of 1.2GHz, and the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 offers the quad core processor, which is the dual core in the US. While the slowest of the three devices is the Apple iPhone 5, it is twice as fast as the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 is packed with quad cores and also offers 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S4 may have quad cores; however it has just 1GB of RAM. This means that the winner is the LG Nexus 4.
The LG Nexus 4 has Jelly Bean 4.2, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has got the update to Jelly Bean 4.1 and the Apple iPhone 5 runs on iOS 6.1.3. iOS does happen to be the most streamlined, but if you want customisation then it would be Android that was the winner. As the LG Nexus 4 should get updates faster than the Samsung Galaxy S3, you may wish to choose between this and the Apple iPhone 5.
If you go for the LG Nexus 4 you will be able to get it in 8 GB or 16 GB of storage. The downside is that it cannot be expanded. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available with 16 GB and 32 GB of storage and you can expand it to another 64 GB. The Apple iPhone 5 is offered with 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB, but lacks SD card support. This means the winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3.
With the LG Nexus 4 you get a display of 4.7 inches of True HD IPS, with resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318ppi. There is a screen of 4 inches on the Apple iPhone 5, which is the smallest of all the handsets, and this is a retina IPS display. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the 4.8 inch screen and this is 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED. While all of the screens are good, the IPS ones stand out for their colours. These displays are also the best for viewing outside. Super AMOLED can be too realistic. As the LG Nexus 4 offers the biggest IPS display it wins.
