New Baby Alert: Jillian Barberie Reynolds welcomes Rocco Rio (plus bonus game)

New Baby Alert: Jillian Barberie Reynolds welcomes Rocco Rio (plus bonus game)
Axelle/Bauergriffin.com

They do the Duggars one better: Jillian Barberie Reynolds and Grant Reynolds welcomed their son Rocco Rio Reynolds this week. Rocco joins big sister Ruby Raven Reynolds.

Devotees of the celebrity baby name will undoubtedly think of Madonna's young Rocco (who last name also begins with R). If you've really been paying attention, you'll note that gymnast Shannon Miller recently bestowed Rocco on her son as a middle name.

Rocco, which a Namipedia reader tells us may derive either from elements meaning "roar, battle-cry" or "rest, repose," was on the charts from 1891 to 1995 (it peaked at #291 in 1920), re-entered in 2001 and has risen steadily since (to #418 in 2008). In this it's a nice match with Ruby, which also has an up-down-up popularity pattern over the last century.

But back to what we all want to talk about: the alliteration. Besides the triple Rs in their names, Rocco Rio and Ruby Raven each have an additional layer of patterning.

  • Rocco and Rio both begin with R, and end with O.
  • Ruby and Raven both begin with R, and are the names of colors.

And so we unveil the Name Candy Jillian Barberie Reynolds Name Game. The names must begin with R, and must contain a second element of similarity. Can you guess that second element in the following names?

  • Ramona Rachel Reynolds
  • Ripley Ryan Reynolds
  • Robinson Ry Reynolds
  • Rita Rosalie Reynolds

Put your guesses (and your contributions) in the comments.

What do you think of Rocco Rio and Ruby Raven?

Each name is two syllables. Ripley Ryan Reynolds matches that pattern.

Dig deeper, anon. Anything else Ripley and Ryan have in common?

All I can come up with is Ripley, the character played by Sigourney Weaver in Alien. And Jeri Ryan played 7 of 9 on one of the Star Trek shows. That's pretty thin...

Rita and Rosalie are both derived from flower names.

I have no idea about the game, I just wanted to say that I am reminded of Robert Rodriguez's kids - Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue, & Rhiannon. And for a while, he was engaged to a Rose (McGowen).

Crystal, that wasn't exactly the connection I had in mind but is also a good one!

I've provided a hint for one of the others...

Thanks for playing, everyone! Here are the answers:

Ramona Rachel -- kid's book characters. (Ramona Quimby and Judy Blume's Rachel Robinson. This one probably wasn't fair, as I had to Google quite a bit before I came up with a second young adult heroine whose name begins with R.)

Ripley Ryan -- Matt Damon characters.

Robinson Ry -- musicians (Smokey Robinson and Ry Cooder. Disappointed no one picked up on the hint "I Second that Emotion," my favorite Smokey Robinson song!)

Rita Rosalie -- saints' names.

I deifnitely though about Ry Cooder and Chris Robinson (does he have a sone named Ry? I think I got stuck with that!)

Really fun game!
