Vienna Waits for You
Anyone who's strolled down the supermarket checkout line in the past few weeks has seen the name Vienna plastered across the tabloid covers. At the moment, the name Vienna is most famously attached to reality-television star, The Bachelor winner/villainess, Vienna Girardi.
In case you missed this season of the reality dating show, Vienna was the subject of much gossip and speculation. To say she was unpopular among the other women on the show would be an understatement. The other contestants warned bachelor Jake Pavelka that Vienna was not the wholesome girl he was looking for. A 23-year-old former Hooters waitress, it turned out Vienna had been engaged to one of her exes and married to another. In an interview with a tabloid, the ex-husband also warned Jake to run the other way. It's safe to say that Vienna was one of the most unpopular contestants the show has ever seen.

The name Vienna has never made it into the top thousand names in the U.S., but in a world where the names London and Paris are rising fast, Vienna could be the next great European city to be capitalized on by trendy parents seeking a fresh-sounding place name.
And, more than other place names, Vienna actually sounds like a girl's name (think Sienna) and plays in to some of the hottest name sounds today "Vi-" (like Violet and Vida) and the -a ending (Emma, Ava, Sophia, etc.)
For those who thinks the name carries too much negative baggage, we're guessing that in a year's time, no one will remember the Bachelor contestant, but Vienna the name will have somehow made its way into the zeitgeist and unwitting parents-to-be who never even saw the show will pick the name Vienna for its style and substance.

No way. I can't hear the name Vienna without thinking "Sausage!" I can't be the only one! Yuck!
This article makes me sad. Vienna is on my list for Girls names. I love it, but if it's gaining popularity, that makes me slightly lean away from it. Hopefully the Vienna phase goes up only slightly, and then disappears before we have our first girl!
I think it's awful. It sounds like the name of a desert, place name, and a new Crayola color all in one.
I'm with the "sausage" person. God forbid any little girl named "Vienna" ever go through a "chunky" phase. . .honestly, if the city itself doesn't mean something very special to you, then I think it's a little lame to name your child after a city. Otherwise, you are permanently attaching your child's image to a place (and in this case, a nasty "snack food"!) that others will always think of, for no real reason on your end.

My second daughter was born last June, and we named her Vienna. And I am HORRIFIED about this reality show woman turning up on tabloids everywhere. I pride myself on giving unique names to my kids, and I am very scared it will become popular. I am a musician, so the idea of Vienna being the city of Mozart and music was appealing, and one of my very favorite singers is Vienna Teng. In addition to it being a beautiful name (in my opinion, of course!), those are the reasons we chose it. My husband affectionately calls her "schnitzel".
I think naming a daughter Vienna puts her in the limelight to be a very mean and manipulative girl with too much going for her for the wrong reasons.
