Celebrity Baby Name Alert: River James Murray

Sean Murray of television's NCIS and his wife Carrie James welcomed a second child this week.  The new baby, a boy, is named River James and joins older sister Caitlyn Melissa.

The name River, which means, well, river, was virtually unheard of in the United States before the appearance of the young actor River Phoenix in the popular consciousness in the 1980s. The name River first broke the top-1000 in the 1990s, but the name's close identification with a single celebrity who died of a drug overdose at age 23 in 1993 probably prevented it from really taking off among parents of Phoenix's own generation.  Now, it seems that enough time has passed, and the name is beginning to enjoy a spike in popularity.  In 2008, River rose 100 spaces on the popularity charts from the previous year to #461.  Based on its popularity among celebrity parents -- we now list three little Rivers in NameCandy's Celebrity Baby Names Database  -- expect to see the trend continue.

I wonder if they know about Autralia's greatest river - the Murray River? Also know as the River Murray! No Aussie baby would ever receive this name combo :-)

The name Caitlyn needs to be forever removed from any list of possible name choices.

I love River, and it's way fresher than his sister's name.

Perhaps they can call her Cait. Now, that is fresh.
