Online Name Aliases

Did you catch the story in the New York Times this weekend about high school students changing their names on social networks like Facebook so as not to expose the (perhaps) less desirable sides of their personalities to college admissions officers? (see An Online Alias Keeps Colleges Off Their Trail).

Veiling a name's Google-ability while maintaining a semblance of recognizability is not news on baby name web sites like this one and BabyNameWizard.com, where a few years ago, users started posting new baby alerts for babies with names like 3mily,  @idan and C0ll33n.

Some examples of aliases in the Times story are:
Amy --->Aim E
Amanda Uziel ---> Uzi Shmuzi
Albert Media ----> Al Isin Wonderland
Audri Augenbraum--->Audri Eyebrows (the English translation of her German surname).
Haley Markbreiter ---> Haley Go Lightly

It got us wondering, what would our favorite celebs use for online aliases? Post your best ideas in Comments, below.

I've never understood why commenters on BNW use those substitutions - you can't find someone from just their first name, at least in most cases, and the commenters are rarely revealing private information.

However, changing names on Facebook makes perfect sense, especially with their cavalier approach to keeping user information private. I'm keeping a second list of names that are a little too out-there for my husband and i to use, but which i like, and when my baby is old enough to use the internet we'll choose a second name from that list for her to use as an online alias, along with a different birthday and maybe a fake address.

Well, I'm not sure about an alias, but I would have loved to help Gwyneth Paltrow name her daughter. The child should have been called something like Phoebe, or Genevieve, or Britain. I still can't believe the name Apple.

Maybe Apple can eventually choose a normal name for her online alias.

Or, maybe Apple IS her alias, and Gwyneth is pulling a joke on us.
