New Celebrity Baby Alert: McGreggor Edward Roberts

One Life to Live Actress Bree Williamson and her husband Michael Roberts welcomed a baby boy named McGreggor Edward.

McGreggor, a Scottish last name,  fits the trend for surname names, as well as the trend for names that start with Mc-. It's not on the charts, but it does hit several cultural notes.

First of all, Farmer McGregor is the farmer in Beatrix Potter's tale of Peter Rabbit (a subject we discussed at greater length in the birth announcement for Jodie Sweetin's daughter, Beatrix). Second of all, Ewan McGregor is the cute dad to adorably-named celebrity kids Clara, Esther and Jamiyan.  (Cool coincidence alert: Ewan McGregor played Beatrix Potter's fiance in the Renee Zellweger flick Miss Potter.)

Finally, McGregor was a name singled out in 2005's Freakonomics as one of 20 "White Boy Names That Best Signify High Education Parents."  (Finnegan, Beckett and Calder are three others.) The Freakonomics authors also included McGregor on their list of predictions for the top baby names of 2015. Love them or hate them, the Freakonomics guys are provocative. In fact, the name-related clip from their new movie did not get our Name Lady's seal of approval.

What do you think of McGreggor Edward?

I'm just not a fan of most surnames used as first names.

I think McGreggor is an interesting name for a boy. I'm not so sure about Edward as a middle name, maybe Ian would be better.
