Jane Krakowski and Robert Godley have welcomed their first child, a son named Bennett Robert Godley. Congratulations!

Bennett makes sense for today's namers; a kind of cross of Benjamin and Emmett, but without the pitfalls of those names. With Benjamin, there's the overexposure. The 20th most popular name in the US in 2009, it's the MOST popular name in Chile. Benjamin is a top-50 name in more than a dozen countries, including Iceland and Slovenia. Gisele Bundchen and Jon Travolta both have baby Benjamins. And wiith Emmett, there's that vampire thing. Bennett neatly sidesteps either issue, and you can still use the nickname "Ben."

Like Emmett and Bennett? You can also try Barrett, Beckett, Garrett, or Jarrett

Here's something curious about Bennett. Moderately popular around the US (most recently, it ranked #309) in popularity, it was VERY popular last year in Minnesota, leaping up to #81. (If you have an explanation, we're all ears.)  And if you care about a name's genderbending potential, take note: actress Summer Glau (aka River Tam from Firefly) played a chick named Bennett in another Joss Whedon project, Dollhouse.

What do you think of Bennett? Would you enjoy it on a girl?

I thought this was Jane Kaczmarek at first. I was like wow Bennett doesn't go with Frances, George, and Mary Louisa at all!

I really like Bennett though, reminds me of Pride and Prejudice.

I'm from Minnesota, and I know a few Bennetts.....the only explanation I can think of is that there is an enormous family of Bennetts in SW MN. Maybe the name just spread from there. People really do copy a lot once they hear a classic-sounding, yet unusual name.

It's a great name, and it sounds rich. The first baby Bennett I heard of was from a wealthy home.

My 5 year old son is Bennet (with one 't'). We named him after Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. LOVE it, but not for a girl!

I don't think Benjamin is a name that can be "over-exposed." I see it is a classic. Even though from kindergarten to twelfth grade, with only seventh grade as an exception, there were 1-4 Ben's in my grade I still love it.

I love Bennett too (Although I prefer Bennet as in Elizabeth).
