About A Boy... Named Arlo

About A Boy... Named Arlo

Toni Collette has announced that her Good Friday was actually "the greatest Friday" because she and her husband, David Galafassi, welcomed their first son: Arlo Robert Galafassi.

The About A Boy, Muriel's Wedding and Little Miss Sunshine star, who currently stars in Showtime's United States of Tara series, gave birth to the baby boy in her native Australia, but his name comes from other areas of the world. One of the origins of Arlo is Spanish and it means "barberry tree" -- a shrub like plant with thorny shoots native to subtropical regions. It also has Old English roots, it's a variant of Harlow, and means "fortified hill." It's also an Italian form of Charles.

The name Arlo has an upbeat feeling to it -- perhaps because of its strong association to American folk singer Arlo Guthrie, who had several hits including "Alice's Restaurant." Toni, too, has musical ties. The Golden Globe-nominated actress also fronts a band with her husband called Toni Collette & the Finish.

Arlo has had some popularity as a name through the years -- appearing on the higher end of the top-1000 list from 1912 to 1944, when it dropped off and has stayed off. However, it's popular in Scotland, where it's currently ranked at #406.

Other names similar to Arlo could be the above noted Harlow, as well as Atticus, Harley, Oscar, Milo and Leo.

We like that Arlo's name has a plant meaning because his 3-year-old sister is Sage, a medicinal herb as well as for seasoning food. So it's a complementary sibset with the natural, earthy undertones. It's also nice that both names have the same number of letters.

What do you think about the name Arlo? Think it will return to the top-1000 popular names list? What kind of a person do you think of when you hear the name? Weigh in below.

My Grandmother had a cat named Arlo. Her daughter got it and named it after Arlo Guthrie. This was the late 60s, early 70s. It's a great name for a kid and great name for a cat.

I like Arlo. It's on my list for another boy, although it's in the top 15 it's not in the top 5.
