Do You Have A 2011 Hurricane Name?
This week marks the official beginning of the six-month long US Atlantic hurricane season. As you know, hurricanes are given names (people names, not pet names!) to identify and track each storm. The National Hurricane Center generated six original lists of hurricane names that have rotated each year since 1953 (so the 2011 names are the same as 2005, 1999, 1993... 1957...).
Devastating and historic hurricane names are removed from the list and retired forever, replaced with new names decided by the World Meteorological Organization. This year's list had a few replacements for big storms:
Dennis is replaced with Don
Katrina is replaced with Katia
Rita is replaced with Rina
Stan is replaced with Sean
Wilma is replaced with Whitney
These devastating storm names may or may not have an effect on baby name trends. Laura Wattenberg noted on her BabyNameWizard.com blog that following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, the name actually rose in popularity 11% that year, though she did note that the hurricane happened late August so the first 8 months of babies had a different context for the name. It still remains to be seen if Earl will drop in popularity after the 2010 Hurricane Earl. Read more about Of Storms and Style.
Here is the complete list of 2011 Hurricane names-- is your or your baby's name on this list?

In related news, the baby name Storm recently appeared in the news as a gender-free name for a child being raised without gender identity. Though this name is not on the list of hurricane names, it has stirred up quite a storm of its own!

I've always loved the name Katia. I love Katja even more. However, I could never name a child that. To me, Katja is a name that just drips sex. Katja is a character who would be played by Penelope Cruz, someone who just oozes elegant sensuality. It just seems wrong on a baby.
Rina is an interesting name for me because I know no less than 5 Rena's but have never met a Rina. All of them were Jewish so it came from the Hebrew word Joy.
Love Emily. It's been one of my favorite names forever.
As a southerner I really hope we have tame season this year, but I will admit I somewhat selfishly would hate for my favorite name Ophelia to have hurricane baggage.
My daughter is named Katrina, so named because it wasn't super popular... of course, then comes the hurricaine & blew that methodology out of the water! LOL. (For the record, my Katrina was a bit of a handfull growing up, but she by no means deserved to have a hurricaine named after her! LOL)
I have a cousin named Emily and my husband's name is Nate. That cracks me up. What there should be is a hurricane named Everett, he is Emily's brother and definitely more of a hurricane child. :)
Haha, Storm, that name has been forever ruined for me. Search youTube for 'Storm' and 'Tim Minchin' and you'll see why. The clip is about ten minutes long, but hilarious.
Neither my name nor my kids' names are on the list, although I know almost too many little Emilys to count. I know a few Seans, too, of varying ages, and a couple of Dons who are not children.

Thus, the 2011 hurricane name list is the same as the 2005 hurricane name list although four hurricane names were retired after the devastating 2005 hurricane season so on the 2011 list Dennis was replaced by Don, Katrina was replaced by Katia, Rita was replaced by Rina, Stan was replaced Sean, and Wilma was replaced by Whitney.
