Is This Beyonce's Baby Name?
Disney

The Internet is on fire with rumors and speculation that Beyoncé and Jay-Z's bundle of joy is here/on the way/coming soon. The couple has stayed silent, as have their reps, and there are no credible reports to speak of, but that hasn't stopped one joker from circulating a photo of "Baby Carter," which is actually a mash up of Beyoncé and Jay-Z pictures, creating a rather unattractive (but amusing) baby. And if you google Tiana-May Carter, you'll find stories stating that's the name the couple selected for their little one.

Clearly this a slow news week, so people are getting creative, but Tiana is an interesting pick for a name — whether it's true or (more likely) false — so we thought we'd explore it.

Tiana, also spelled Tianna, is the name of Disney's first African-American princess from the film The Princess and the Frog. According to BabyNameWizard.com's Namipedia, when Disney first conceived the character, she was going to be a chambermaid, living in New Orleans in the 1920s, named Maddy. There was strong criticism from the public, many suggested Maddy sounded like a "slave name," so the folks at Disney reworked the character to come up with a name that was "more regal" for their princess. The maid concept was scrapped and in place they came up with a waitress character named Tiana, which is a hair away from...tiara.

In an essay written by BabyNameWizard's Laura Wattenberg, she labeled Tiana a "name on the verge" and described it as "a contemporary name with an undeniable sparkle." It’s a popular choice in African-American families today — from 2009, when the Disney film came out, to 2010 it jumped from No. 604 to No. 334 on the popular name list — but it doesn’t actually appear to have African roots. And, interestingly, Tiana wouldn’t have been a realistic name for an African-American woman in Louisiana in the ‘20s, though Disney’s original choice, Maddy, would have been. Read Laura's full story about Tiana here.

In a story we did here on NameCandy.com when Beyoncé and Jay-Z announced their baby news, we talked about why there is such great interest in the couple’s name selection — their birth announcement set records on Twitter for the most tweets per second on a topic — along with some name possibilities. Beyoncé's name is actually a family name, it’s a form of her mother’s maiden name, as is the name of her clothing line, House of Dereon, which is after Beyonce's maternal grandmother, Agnez Dereon. So a family name is a strong possibility. If we were calling the odds, Tiana seems like a longshot.

So until Beyoncé and Jay-Z actually have their baby, the speculation will continue. NameCandy readers have actually made some guesses of their own from funny ones (like Zeyonce and JayBee) to more serious (Emiliana, Viviana and Adriana).

Now that the baby’s arrival is here/on the way/coming soon, take a guess as to when Baby Carter will make her debut and what you think the famous couple will name their little one. Plus, give us feedback about the name Tiana. What do you like or dislike about it?

Tiana could be considered an homage to Tina, Beyonce's mother.

And don't forget that Beyonce's mother is Tina...though with that knowledge I can't decide if the name is a definite rumour or a sure thing...

Here's a post I just came across that had suggestions for Beyonce's baby. I like these much better than Tiana-May.

Yes, as the name Beyonce is itself a variation on her mother's maiden name, Beyince, Tiana has got to be in honor of her mother's first and middle names, Tina Ann. (Technically, her mother's name is Celestine Ann, but she goes by Tina.) And then it's just perfect that it also happens to be the name of the Disney African American princess!

I'm sure it will be an unusual name. This couple is nothing if not unique sor I expect their baby's name will be too. Congratulations to them and I hope their baby is as beautiful as its mother.

My friend's daughter is 10 and named Tianna. One namebook gives its meaning as a slavic name meaning "Princess", so the Princess Tiana in the movie is well named.
