One Life To Live Ends Its 43-Year Run With A Poignant Conversation About Baby Names
It was the end of an era today when the soap opera One Life to Live ended after a 43-year-run. There were many sentimental moments during the one-hour finale, including the birth of a baby and the family coming together to name him.
The character Bo Buchanan, who has been part of the show since 1979, and his wife Nora watched as their son, Matthew became a first-time father with his girlfriend Destiny Evans. In a soapy moment, she went into the labor and couldn't make it to the hospital, so — with her extended family around — she gave birth in the living room. And the happy family (including grandparents) gathered together after that to powwow over baby names.
Mom Destiny said she thought she was having a girl, so she'd only thought of the name Yolanda. Then grandfather Bo suggested they name the baby after his other son (and Matthew's brother) David, who brought Matthew and Destiny together. Matthew said that he wanted the baby to have a family name, but he had another one in mind — Drew, after his police officer brother who had died in the line of duty before Matthew was born.
With lots of tears flowing, for the Drew who was no longer there and the one who now was, Bo told Matthew: "I think that would be a fine name, son."
The names of the Buchanans, one of the core families on the show always stood out during the show's tenure. When the character of Bo arrived on the show, the name — meaning "handsome" — had just cracked the Top-1000 popular names list. And it's consistently stayed there (though on the bottom of the list) in all the years the show aired — most recently it's at No. 834. The alternative spelling Beau has far surpassed Bo in popularity. It became popular in the late 1960s but shot up the charts and it's currently at No. 375.
Rounding out the Buchanan family were Bo's father Asa (another name that's been on the rise as long as the show's been on the air), mother Olympia (not popular--the last time it was on the list was 1925) as well as brother Clint (dropped off the list in 2000).
Some of the other more interesting named characters on the show through the years include:
Starr Manning
Gigi Morasco
Rex Balsom
Roxy Balsam
Talia Sahid
Echo DiSavoy
Flash Roberts
Dallas Jones

OLTL has been on fire for years. ABC is stupid to cancel their # 1 soap. They have gained hundreds of thousands of viewers up from a year before and was named the best soap of 2011 by all of the soap media.
Apparently Kayla was not even a name until it showed up on Days of Our Lives in the early 1980s.
Why didn't AMC get a farewell post?
Soaps are great for name trends. I laughed when AMC came out with a 30-something Madison a few years ago. No girl would have been named Madison 30 years ago.
I do love many of the names - Kendall, Phoebe, Bianca, etc.
I have a cousin named Kayla who is in her early 60s, so I don't think that Days of Our Lives can be given credit for that...
It's an oldie, but Amanda became popular and Marley became a girl's name because of characters on Another World.
too funny - there were a brother and sister who auditioned on American Idol called Schyler and Colton
