Celebrity Baby Name Alert: Lindsay Davenport Welcomes New Daughter Kaya Emory

Former tennis pro Lindsay Davenport and husband Jonathan Leach welcome new daughter Kaya Emory Leach! The baby was born on January 16, but Davenport just announced the name via Twitter yesterday, tweeting, "Thanks for all the messages. Everyone is great. We named her Kaya Emory Leach..although not sure if we are going to call her Kaya or Emory." Kaya Emory will be joining big sister Lauren Andrus, who is 2, and big brother Jagger Jonathan, 4.

The name Kaya jumped on to the popularity charts in 2003, ranking the 542nd most popular female baby name, but peaked in 2004 at 539 and has been declining since then. It's likely that the sudden popularity of the name had to do with the introduction in 2002 of the Kaya American Girl doll.

According to Namipedia, Kaya has many origins from Japanese to Hindi and meanings just as diverse. Kaya is also similar to and slightly less popular than the name Kaia, which comes from "kai," the Hawaiian word for sea. Kaya Emory joins two other celebrity babies named Kaya -- model Carrie Otis's daughter Kaya Elizabeth Drolma Sutton and Kaya McKenna LaRue, daughter of actors Eva LaRue and John Callahan.

Kaya and Emory are quite different sounding names and it will be interesting to see which the parents ultimately choose to call their new baby. Unlike the delicate and feminine Kaya, the name Emory used to be a popular boys name in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It fell out of favor about 50 years ago and has not yet been frequently used as a baby girls name. However, with the trend of reviving vintage classics that is fashionable at the moment, maybe Emory will join the ranks of Caseys and Dylans as a new popular unisex name.

What do you think of the name Kaya Emory? Do you prefer the name Kaya or Emory?

I prefer Kaya obviously. Emory/Emery is a boys name.

But I thought she named her daughter something much worse: Maxwell.

How is Kaya pronounced? Cay-ah or CIh-ah? Not really a fan either way, just curious.

Having a GrandDAUGHTER named Taylor (a UNisex Name) I'll Opt 4 the Emory as I don't think that Laren & Kaya go 2ether very well & Emory is more Campatible, I think!! She could B Em 4
short & that is good!! Emma would also have been a Good NaME.
