New Band One Direction Tops The Charts In More Ways Than One
Fame/Flynet

Have you been recently hoping to relive your tween years? Well then you're in luck! Just a few weeks ago, a new boy band rolled onto the scene, direct from across the pond. One Direction recently became the first UK band to debut at number one with their first album, when Up All Night went straight to number one, selling over 176,000 copies in its first week out in the U.S.

This success follows their breakout in the UK with their hit single "What Makes You Beautiful." Of course, their songs aren't the only popular thing about them. Like boy bands before them (e.g., Hanson), One Direction is made up of boys with popular, even trendy names -- Liam, Harry, Louis, Zayn and Niall. The names, which don't stand out as particularly strange, but certainly not commonplace to Americans, are big hits in the U.K.

Harry is the most popular at No. 3, Liam ranks at No. 34 (and is also growing in the U.S.) and Louis is a little further down at No. 68, but all Top 100. Niall is from Ireland, where his name is in the Top 100, while his fellow band member, British-Pakastani Zayn, has a popular English-Arabic name, often spelled Zain

During the era of boy bands in the U.S., when The Back Street Boys, 'N Sync, 98 Degrees and Hanson dominated every tween's fantasies, the names were almost always popular. Hanson may have stood out a bit from the Nicks and Justins with trendier names like Isaac and Taylor, but for the most part the bands were dominated by fairly commonplace names. Even the more contemporary Jonas Brothers all have pretty traditional names with Paul, Joseph and Nicholas. What about a boy band full of unusual and interesting names, or might that hamper their success?

What do you think of the names of One Direction? Do you think band members' names can contribute to the band's overall success?

Zayn Malik's name is actually spelled Zain, I don't know why he changed it for the band - maybe to make it more trendy looking (Brian from Westlife changed the spelling of his name to Bryan because it was easier to autograph - so maybe a tip from Louis Walsh?)

I think their "normal" names help make them accessible to the public, it gives them a "boy next door" feel and that generally helps with boy band appeal making them seem like normal every day boys who have been given an extraordinary opportunity.

I find that British name trends are slightly ahead of US name trends when they are similar - but they both have individual trends that don't cross over as well.

Any way, I really like One Direction and their names are sound fresh and new which I think aids in their appeal.
