Poppy’s in Bloom for Jessica Capshaw’s Third Child
Fame/Flynet

Jessica Capshaw, Grey’s Anatomy star (and stepdaughter of Steven Spielberg), welcomed her third child with husband Christopher Gavigan, a girl named Poppy James Gavigan. Poppy James joins older sibs Luke Hudson and Eve Augusta. Although Poppy has never charted in the top 1000 in the U.S., it is currently #28 in England, and a rising star among celebs, with both Anthony Edwards and Jamie Oliver choosing it for their daughters. With its bubbly consonants and playful -y ending, Poppy is right on-trend, and as bright as its red flower namesake.

As an addition to the sib-set of Luke (#39) and Eve (#546), Poppy, with its British feel and relative obscurity, is a bit of a surprise. (Although both sibling names are also more popular in England than in the U.S., with Luke at #21 and Eve at #76.) Plugging Luke and Eve into the handy Name MatchMaker, we’re suggested more popular names like Leah, Kate, and a different flower, Lily. Plugging in preferences for less popular names and a length of no more than six letters, the MatchMaker points instead to Leia, Mira, or Susana. Nonetheless, we think the three make a great set.

The ultra-feminine sound of Poppy meets a balance with the masculine (possible surname-inspired) James. James isn’t unheard of as a feminine middle name -- it’s also the middle name of Sean Combs’ daughter, Jessie, and James Marsden’s daughter, Mary

I love the name Poppy. I've been working on a children's novel for nearly 2 years and named my main character Poppy and the other main character Leo. I wanted fresh upcoming names. Looks like I better hurry and finish before they are all out popular.

Poppy is adorable. James just makes me say, "Seriously?" I admit, I do not like boy names on girls. Period. Some are more acceptable to me as middle names, but James? NO.
