Dog named Charlie? We must be in Chelsea
WNYC, New York’s public radio affiliate, recently produced a great map of registered dog names in New York. The map shows the most common name by neighborhood and is based on a listing put out by New York City Department of Health officials giving the most popular names and breeds for all licensed dogs around the five boroughs.
How do the dog names compare to human names in NYC? Take a look at the top 10 boy girl baby names and the top 10 male and female dog names from 2011:

Though the dog names (especially for females) struck us as very human it turns out that New York dog namers are more nickname-friendly than most parents—though we may occasionally run into a boy named Buddy or Rocky or a girl named Coco, even celeb parents still seem to favor an official “formal” name. Among the top 10 dog names only Jack and Chloe are in the top 50 nationally, and deeper in the data, we found only four dogs named Jayden suggesting that our furry friends’ names follow different trends than baby names do.
We suggest that dog lovers check out the WNYC website for a name-breed breakdown and more fun stuff.
Were you surprised by any of the most popular NYC dog names? Do you have a favorite baby name that you’ve used for a pet?
