Jeremy Sisto Discusses Son's Unusual Name

Jeremy Sisto Discusses Son's Unusual Name
Flynet Pictures, Inc.

Almost a year after the birth of Jeremy Sisto's son Bastian Kick, we're still wondering what inspired Jeremy and his wife Addie Lane's choice. Also father to toddler Charlie-Ballerina, Jeremy has said, "I never really pictured myself having a family so it felt strange to name my child after anyone else alive. So my wife went through the dictionary, page by page, looking for words that weren’t normally names." This week, he finally shared with PEOPLE what first struck him about baby Bastian Kick's name.

The star said, "We didn’t name him until the baby was about a month because we didn’t want to rush into anything…I met Cheryl [Hines']’s boyfriend‘s daughter who’s called Kick and that was actually where I came up with it. It was inspiration. We were going to name our [daughter] Charlie Kyd, but David [Duchovny] already named his kid that so I decided against it. And Kick was similar to Kyd."

When deciding on his son's first name, Jeremy explains, "He felt like a ‘B’ somehow…and we went for the B’s…Like that NeverEnding Story movie — his name was Bastian." We guessed it! Now all that's left in Bastian Kick's name saga is updating his records. "I think it’s actually Kick on the birth certificate still, but we’re going to change that soon," said Jeremy.

What do you think of the sibling names Bastian Kick and Charlie-Ballerina?

Charlie-Ballerina ist still one of the most ridiculous names I have ever heard. It's ok on the doll of a five-year-old but seriously: how can a grown-up come up with that? Unless this girl doesn't have their parents' crazy celebrity self-esteem she's going to shorten it to Charlie legally someday.

Bastian Kick? It works for me.
Charlie-Ballerina however, does not. Just like the Sisto-Lane family, I too want something special and unique for my children but.........
I think of it like this: Would I name my child Anthony-Amazing Reader, or Julia-Soccer Star, or Kendra-Swimmer, or Rowan-Heisman? No. As parents we are attempting to shape our child's identity somewhat with the special name we choose. But it's not a game it's a name and a FUTURE. My guess is that they weren't thinking, "we want her to grow up to be a ballerina," but more, "what a delicate name for our tiny princess."
This reminds me of a family I know that named their daughter Sweet Pea.
Something so sweet for an infant can sound very comical on anyone over the age of 7.

Ah, maybe not. Who knows what kind of person she'll grow up to be. Maybe she'll be a "free spirit" and Ballerina will be her favorite part of her name. Everyone likes to assume they know what usually-named children will experience on the playground or in the adult world, but the truth is it's all about how they are raised to feel about it. Not everyone needs to be an Emma or an Olivia to be pleased with their name, and not every Emma or Olivia will love hers. And that's okay because that's just life. If she doesn't like Charlie-Ballerina, she wouldn't be the first kid to hate the name her parents gave her and she can always change it. If she loves it, well then good for her.

I do like the name Ballerine (with an "e") for a first name.

Nina, you are right on. I'm so happy to see that thought expressed. Naming is completely subjective: for every person who couldn't imagine naming a child anything unusual, there's someone who would consider a common name a disservice. The kid will do what she wants, and she will probably change her mind many times as she grows up. Didn't we all go through a period when we didn't like our name?

is no commonly defined measure for what makes a place name unusual, though unorthodox spelling or pronunciation, short or long names, and names derived from unusual sources, such as Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, are often seen as unusual, especially by people outside the culture which named them. -Scott Sohr
