Royal Name Game, Pt. II

Royal Name Game, Pt. II

Bump watchers and royals experts around the internet have spoken: the royal baby is to be a girl. Or a dragon. With Kate’s d- slip, we feel emboldened to guess more girl’s names for the littlest Windsor. We already know that the child, if a girl, would be titled Princess, thanks to the Queen’s recent decree but Princess what?

In a previous post, we ran through a few names with historic pedigree as well as classic but “normal” names. Commenters agreed that we wouldn’t be surprised to see a tribute to the prince’s late mother somewhere in the name. We doubt that Diana would be used as a first name as it not only would be a royal first for a queen, but might also be a little too heavy to have another Princess Diana until she took over the throne, but Diana could easily be one of the princess-to-be’s (sure to be many) middle names. A more subtle acknowledgment of the People’s Princess might be Frances, Diana’s middle name and (as one reader noted) it’s the female version of Kate’s father’s middle name, Frances.

We still think Alexandra, Alice, Charlotte, Helena and Victoria are frontrunners. These five names have history in the royal family but aren’t in use by the current generation of royals, and Alexandra has the added bonus of being one of Queen Elizabeth’s middle names. While these names probably have good odds of being chosen, we wonder if there isn’t a chance for a curveball. Though Will and Kate seem to be traditional and inclined to stick to royal protocol, we’d love to see them pick a personal favorite for their first born. Perhaps a more current choice like Ava, Sophie, or Emily or names that are in the royal history but not necessarily queenly (e.g. something like Louise, Eugenie, Beatrice, or Zara) and let the little one be a bit more of an individual before she takes over the royal reins.

Do you have an out-there suggestion for Will and Kate’s baby name list? Do you think the Royal Family has already decided for them?

I've love to see a bit of a curveball name for the first, either a "traditional" name that hasn't already been used in the royal family or one that isn't "queenly." I'm sure there will be a nod to the Queen and I'd be shocked if Diana isn't used as one of the middles. I think it will be interesting to see what order the tribute names are in. I assume they'll be one of the many middles, but will they offer tribute to Diana before the Queen gets her nod?

I saw an article that said they will name the baby Elizabeth Diana Carole, to honor their mothers and the Queen.

For a first name, I think they will go with a traditional three+ syllabled moniker such as Victoria, Elizabeth, Augusta, Sophia, or Alexandria. These names seem to add some warmth and musicality to the imperial, or some might say imperious, Queen title which eventually will precede it.

How about something strong and dignified like Octavia but give her the cute nickname, Tave, while she's young?

I kind of hope they use Charlotte. I think a Princess Charlotte would be lovely. Also, I don't want them to use Helena or Alice because those are my top two, and I don't want them to increase in popularity a lot! :)
