Busy Philipps Discusses her Daughter’s Names on the Today Show.
Monday, March 10, 2014 actress Busy Philipps sat with Hoda and Kathie Lee on the Today Show discussing the unique baby names she and husband Marc Silverstein named their two daughters, Birdie Leigh, 5, and new born eight-month old Cricket Pearl.
Growing up with a nickname like Busy, short for Elizabeth, Philipps knew her children would have unique names; it gives them a sense of pride and characterizes them as individuals.
Instead of giving them one name and calling them something else, the couple decided, “we would just name them that thing that we wanted to call them.”
Recently Busy got a lot of scrutiny on the name choice via Twitter and had this to say, “It's weird people think my kids will be in therapy because of their names. Guys, my kids will be therapy for LOTS of reasons, I'm sure.”
The name Birdie was popular in the 1880’s and amongst elderly women as a nickname for Bertha. Birdie means, “little bird” or “bright; famous.” Leigh comes from the Old English Leah and means “dweller of wood.” It was extremely popular in the 1970’s and hit its peak. Seems like Birdie Leigh has an old spirit and soul to her name.
As for Cricket Pearl, Cricket is a nickname for Christine or any other Chris- names and means “to creek or rattle” in Old French. Pearl has American, English, and Latin roots and means a variety of meanings all based around “precious.” Cricket Pearl is a precious rattle!
The Cougar Town actress went right back to working four months after giving birth to Cricket. She stated that she’s very fortunate to have a job where she can bring her daughter and a baby nurse with her.
Congrats to the family, we love the names!
What do you think about Birdie and Cricket? Think Busy is an animal lover? Would you have named your children nicknames or given them a “proper name”?
