A Peek Into the Name Lady's Inbox

Every day I receive naming questions of all kinds, and I can only answer a small fraction in print. Believe me though, it's "all kinds." Here's an inside peek at some of the more unusual questions and comments from the Name Lady's Inbox.

"My daughter named her son Emmet. I told her I liked Jake and she had a fit when I sent him a birthday card with a check addressed to Jake....What do you think?"

"Do you think to name your child Rada is weird especially if there is a show called Chowder which features a character named Rada that only ever says rada rada rada rada?

"I named my baby girl Teuslauna (tyoos lawna). I made it up when we couldn't decide a name. A week later someone asked about the name, and my wife goes 'What was it again?' I said 'What?' She said, 'the one you made up?' Took me a week to remember it exactly how it was."

"Would it be odd if all of my kids had the same name like Taylor but just change the middle name?"

"We're having a boy and we have a first and middle name chosen, but my husband is now suggesting we add a second middle name -- Eponymous. Any advice? Is Eponymous a crazy name?"

"My mother named me Mark. I am a girl. What's with that?"

"I chose my daughter's name when I saw it graffitied on a truck when I was pregnant with her so I don't know it's history. What can you share about this name?"

"What would you say to a name that is only rolling your tongue?"

There are a lot of strange people out there, and the trick is to avoid them. As to their questions? File and forget
'em, as you seem to have done until now.

Wow these are hilarious! I feel bad for the girl named Mark and the baby named Teuslauna, and of course any child that has the same name as their siblings.

I would be so angry is my mom or MIL send my child a check make out to the name we didn't choose. Like really, really angry.

Some of my answers -

Learn to like the name Emmett if you ever want to see the little guy.

If the thought has crossed your mind that it is weird, it will cross other people's minds too.

Don't expect anyone else to remember a name that you can't remember either.

Ask your mom. Then get back to me, I'd like to know too.

My answer is just shaking my head.

Ha. My grandmother did this to two of my brothers. For YEARS, she referred to them by random names that she liked better than their given names. Let's just say that it did not endear her to my mother, though my brothers eventually thought it was a great joke. My grandmother is not stupid or suffering from dementia — she's just really selfish.

.I was sharing these with my room mate, and apparently, the tongue rolling one is a Dane Cook joke. It makes me feel better to know that that person likely wasn't serious.

Eponymous's father has a strange sense of humor, but to be honest I find the idea pretty amusing.

Why would you *want* to give all your children the same first name?

what percentage of people can roll their tongue? actually i seem to remember there's a monty python (or possibly fry and laurie) sketch along those lines

Christine-nice answers/comments. Here's mine:

Grandma-get over it!

Stop watching Chowder! It is a horible show geared to pre-adolescent 10 yo's. I know because my son tries to get away with watching it when he thinks I'm not paying attention. On the other hand, I grew up with a girl named Rana (sounds like Ah-na with an R) I think it's a pretty name.

Why would you create a name that has no meaning for you or your daughter? Remember how to spell it or tatoo it to her forehead. Oh wait, you probably already did that!

Yes, naming your children all the same first name would be weird George Foreman!

If Eponymous means something to you and as long as his first name isn't Anonymous, I say go for it!

Mark-ever heard of Markie Post? I think its better than some (see above).

Just some freindly advice, anything you see graffitied on a truck should NOT be used as a first name.

And lastly, how would you spell that ROTT for short?

Actually, for all those people who are saying that "naming with the same first name is completely weird" -- there are some cultures who consider that to be the norm. Growing up, I had a Korean friend who was named Son Chu and her sister was named Son Mi. There was another family with two boys named Kwang Ho and Kwang Sun.

I think maybe it only sounds weird when Western names are used... although I did know two brothers in college who had a Korean mother and an American father, and they were named Gary Edward and Gary Andrew. And yes, they were both called Gary.

I can't believe there are people posting who think those writers "might be" pulling your leg. The only one that might be legit is the selfish grandma calling the kid a different name.

It seems to me that most of these people are incredibly short-sighted. Some thought into long-term hopes for your child will show you that the wierder their name the more grief they are going to get for it.
But let's not knock Chowder. Artistically it's one the best cartoons out there, and a lot of the humor is sophisticated. One mine and my 8 year-olds favorite shows!
Thank you Name Lady, for brightening our days!

My mom has threatened to call all of my kids more normal names than what my husband and I like, but she has never actually done it. I think it is amazing someone could be that selfish- she got to name her kids, now let her kids name their kids. The rolling tongue comment cannot be real as that is a running Dane Cook joke, he also talks about naming his kids Optimus Prime and Megatron. But I know that in some African languages "sound effects" (as we would call them) are actually a part of the names they use. Overall, it's just really funny to read. Tueslauna (or however you spell it) would be interesting in theory, but you would have to spell it in a way that made more sense- or even better, split it up into 2 names- maybe Tess Lana? Same sound, mostly, but so much simpler. Awesome comments though.

@Anne Onimous:

Actually, it's equally weird in Asian cultures to name children with the same PERSONAL name. Your example of Son Chu, and Son Mi, I believe, are likely examples of a bad attempt to westernize an Asian name. Chinese names, at least, traditionally go surname-generation name-personal name. The generation name is what all the kids in 1 generation have - for example, I and my cousin would both have An as a generation name. Zhao An Min and Zhao An Chun, let's say. If I just westernized that, into An Min Zhao and An Chun Zhao, it'd look like our personal names are the same, when in fact they are not.

So I think that Son Chu's personal name is actually Chu, not Son, and her sister's would be Mi. Just my two cents, 'cause I really don't think that would be a norm anywhere. I'm Chinese though, can't really say for Koreans.

I knew a family in grade school where the father's name was Thomas, and both sons were named Thomas. Called Thomas. Though the younger one was occasionally Tommy. (Thoroughly Anglo family, for what it's worth.)

Even as a 6-year-old I knew this was messed up.

I think the Emmet/Jake name is a play on characters from Twilight. Saying that she prefers the name "Jake" is the Grandmother's way of implying she is "Team Jacob"...while in the boy shares a name with one of the Cullens (and is thus "Team Edward"....I think it was meant to be a joke. And I at least find it hilarious.

My grandmother and all of her sisters were named Mary, but all went by their middle names. I think it was meant to be a religious thing, as in the Virgin Mary.

My brother-in-law has a son named Austin, but his Aunt insists on calling him James (his middle name). I would be sooooo annoyed.
That said, I am pregnant and hoping she will not do the same to our baby.

I agree, I named my daughter Masyn Alizabeth Scocia, and my aunt decided to call her ALizabeth, not Scocia. It's the parent's decision to name their child, and while input from family members is valued, nobody should call them anything but their given name. Call him Emmett, they didn't name him Jake, and you certainly didn't either!

Get this I know twins with the same name.
Both named Maria. Not joking unfortunately.

The only differentiations is that one is known as Maria A. and the other Maria J.

It's obvious why these didn't make it to the answered portion of the blog.
I've decide to answer these question for anyone who cares.
1)Mom picks name, not grandma (I know this is terribly impolite but, DUH!!!). Write the wrong name on the card or check and you won't be getting a grandma of the year award, ever.
2)Yes, yes it is weird to name your child something that even YOU have a negative association with.
3)This wasn't even a question. However, we can learn from this that if you want to create your own baby name you should put a LARGE amount of thought into it.
4)Absolutely! It would be very odd, not to mention a tongue twister to name your children: Taylor, Taybor, Taysor, Taykor, Taydor, etc...
Even though this may sound clever and rhythmic to you it won't to anyone else. If you're fine with even the kindest of neighbors laughing and referring to you as the family with all the same names, go for it.
5)Yes, Eponymous is a crazy name.
6)Mark, I have no idea, ask your mom.
7)History and meaning are things you should investigate before you name your child. I hope it's not something inappropriate. I wonder why it wasn't listed above.
8)I would say that a name that is only rolling your tongue is no name at all, for several reasons. One possible complication would be if your child can't say his/her R's?

My gram called my daughter by a different name for about 6 years. I didn't care. She was my gram and she didn't make a big deal out of it. She just called my daughter by the name gram thought it should be. You don't tell a native elder what she can or cannot call your child as long as it isn't mean or obscene. We gave the name to our younger daughter, but gram had died by then. we did it out of respect for my gram.

I know I'm late to the thread here, but I thought I'd mention that I actually know a Rada - my 98-year-old great aunt. Who was named after her aunt.
