In Search of a Sibling Name with the Right Ending

We're having trouble coming up with a name that pairs well with our son's name, Easton. Names that end in the –on sound, such as Greyson, Ashton, Hudson, etc., are not what we're looking for. Our last name begins with R, so names ending with the –er sound are also out. Suggestions?

–Easton's Mom

Many parents who are drawn to this style of name run into this problem. Today's fashionable surnames for boys almost all end in –n and –r. That gets repetitive as your family grows. And then you have the added complication of a surname starting with R.

To preserve the style of Easton but break out of the ends-with-N pattern, there are a couple of other groups of surname-style names with different ending sounds to try.

Is This Baby Name Out of Tune?

I'm pregnant with our second child (we don't know whether it's a boy or girl). Our first child has a name with strong family connections. We'd like to do the same for this one. I like the family surname trend (Jackson, Cooper, etc.) and for us, Gibson would be the name. It's not really used as a first name, but I don't mind the nickname Gib and I like the connection to the famous guitar maker, since we are a family of musicians. Is this too odd of a name for a boy?

–Family Namer

While Gibson is a rare name, I wouldn't call it odd at all. It is used as a first name: It's ranked among the top 1,000 names for boys for the last several years. About 250 new baby boys in the U.S., per year, are named Gibson (and so are a handful of girls!).

Gibson is a fresh twist on a fashionable style, being a surname with a –son ending. That means it's a classic recipe for an attractive name. The fact that it has both a family connection, and a musical one, and you like the nickname? That’s a smash hit.

There Must Be More Baby Names Like This One!

Today, I came across the name Benton. I really like it because it's unique, but it still has familiar sounds: It has the nickname "Ben" and the trendy "-n" ending all rolled into one! It got me wondering: Are there any other names like Benton out there?

–Been Thinking 'Bout Benton

I love this question because there are so many ways to look at it. And no matter how you define "names like Benton," there are plenty of choices that fit the bill. Benton's brother could be a new invention like Daxton, an old surname like Wickham, or a new take on a chart-topper, like Jules or Harris.

Which Is the Right Spelling?

Please help. What is the correct or accepted spelling: Grayson or Greyson? I see things that are personalized with the "a" version, but not the "e" version.

–A Before E?

Good news: They're both right. Like Catherine and Kathryn, this is a name with multiple accepted spellings. The "a" version is more commonly used—about twice as often—but both spellings rank in the top 150, which means both will be accepted easily.

The question here isn't what spelling is correct, but how you choose which one is right for you. In a case like Catherine vs. Kathryn or Geoffrey vs. Jeffrey, you might choose based on first initial. Maybe one makes for a better monogram than the other, or repeats (or avoids repeating) a sibling's initial.
