Should Twins Share an Initial and a Birthday?

I am expecting identical twin girls in my third pregnancy and am stuck on the names Isla and Ines. They are names we love individually and were second choices for our older children (Zac and Ava). They fit well with our family style. However, I'm worried about the girls sharing a first initial when they will also be identical and share a birthday.

I have studied baby name websites, twin forums, and books. We like some other names (Hazel, Ivy, Violet, Esme) but not as much as Isla and Ines. Am I setting them up for unnecessary conflicts as they grow up with confusion over their names along with other twin problems?

–Twin Mom-to-Be

Your hesitation makes sense. Both Isla and Ines are short, foreign-feeling, and breezy in addition to sharing that striking initial letter. There's a certain matched quality to the pairing that's reason for pause. You may be envisioning one elementary-school teacher after another struggling for nine months to tell your girls apart. Or worse, that you'll unwittingly communicate to the world and to your daughters that they are, first and foremost, a set, interchangeable and paired rather than individual.

Are These Twin Names Too Much Alike?

My husband and I view family namesakes as very important. Grandmothers Ellen and Norma made Eleanor an easy choice for our first daughter, with my husband's late sister filling in the middle name. I'm now expecting twin boys, and I could so easily name them after our fathers. My dad is Eli and my father-in-law is Sylvester; he goes by Sy or Syl.

Early on, I said we'd name the boys Silas and Elias and that was that. Then I got told by several people they were too similar. While they certainly are, I don't know if they rise to the level of "matchy" the way Iris and Lily or Holden and Hayden would—and they are named after their grandfathers! Am I wrong here? Should I pick new names? For the record, the grandfathers both approve.

–Twin Trap

I often hear from worried parents-to-be about matchy twin names. While sibling pairings are frequently a concern too, having twins seems to up the ante (and the stress level) even more. As in many of these cases, your pair is borderline: Some observers will call it way too much of a match, while others will see no issue at all.

Are matching twin names too cheesy?

How do you feel about anagram names? I am debating whether or not the names Celia and Alice would be okay for my twin girls. My husband says that this might be too cheesy, but I think that ryhming names are cheesy for twins, but anagram names are fine. Alice is a beloved family name, and I love the more modern name Celia. Is my husband right; are anagram names too much for twins?
- Anna Gramm

Here's my rule for "theme" baby names: never, ever choose a name to fit a sibling theme if you wouldn't have chosen that name on its own.

Each child deserves a name that's whole in itself, and that was chosen with her parents' total enthusiasm. A little Tulip with big sisters Lily, Rose, Violet and Daisy has been shortchanged.  Tulip comes across as just one more blossom in the bouquet, not an individual. The sibling set mattered more than her name. Worst of all, she'll always know that her parents considered her name fifth-best out of a very small pool.
