James Dean May No Longer be the Bad Boy

James Dean was known as the ultimate bad boy back in his day, but it looks as though today James would have had more of a chance.  MSNBC.com reports that a study just released by David Kalist in the Social Science Quarterly suggests that a normal name like James gives a boy less of a chance of becoming a "bad boy" than a name like Alec.  Why is this?  Kalist's study suggests that boys named with unpopular (read different) names may face more angst because of their names, which will result in bad boy behavior.  The top ten "bad boy" names are:

Alec
Ernest
Garland
Ivan
Kareem
Luke
Malcolm
Preston
Tyrell
Walter

So how many bad boys are out there?  In the past twenty years, here are the popularity results for each name according to the Social Security Administration.

  • Alec: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 109 in 1994.
  • Ernest: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 265 in 1989.
  • Garland: Not ranked any year for the past twenty years.
  • Ivan: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 117 in 2004.
  • Kareem: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 545 in 1994.
  • Luke: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 41 in 2004 and 2005.
  • Malcolm: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 206 in 1992.
  • Preston: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 114 in 2006 and 2007.
  • Tyrell: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 354 in 1992.
  • Walter: Ranked every year for the past twenty years, with a peak ranking of 184 in 1989.

It appears there are quite a few bad boys roaming the streets today, so hopefully this study isn't so correct!

Walter?? Malcolm?? Garland?? Give me a break - If any guys with these names want to be bad boys they'd have to change their names before one girl on the planet would even give them the time of day!
