New Baby Alert: Kathryn Hahn's daughter Mae

New Baby Alert: Kathryn Hahn's daughter Mae

Kathryn Hahn, former Crossing Jordon star, and hubbie Ethan Sandler welcomed daughter Mae into the world on Monday July 27, 2009.  People reports that Kathryn's due date was in September, but apparently Mae got sick of waiting and after two days of labor this baby girl came out at 5 lbs.  Word is that mother and daughter are a-okay.  Mae's got an older brother to check in on her -- Leonard, 2 1/2.

As speakeasys reappear in cities across the country as the hot spots to drink and mingle, old-fashioned names are also making a strong comeback in the celebrity world.  Just to name a few: Otis Maguire, Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick, Adele Georgiana Gianopoulos (Molly Ringwald's daughter) and Mathilda Ledger. Old-fashioned names just have a way of sounding lovely, serious and fun all at once. See what the name lady has to say about old-fashioned names -- are they old-lady or just old-school?

What might you not know about Mae?  The name has frequently been a nickname for Mary and Margaret.  It can also be used in combination names (as in Anna-Mae) or stand alone.  Mae West is one of the most famous Maes.  Teresa Norman tells us in her book, A World of Baby Names, how West inspired a particular usage of Mae:  "Her shapely bustline led to her name being used for an inflatable life preserver vest for use by RAF aviators downed at sea during WWII."  Not many names can boast that kind of uplift!  As for name popularity, Mae ranked the 55th most popular name in the 1890s, its highest ranking, but since then has been on a downward slope, leaving the top 1000 in the 1960s.

Hmm, our hunch is that Kathryn is at the front of an incoming tide.  Tess, Delia, Daisy, Walter, George -- this naming fashion looks to be back.

Are your parents or grandparents' names suddenly sounding more appealing to you?  Before mocked and now a source of inspiration?  Do tell!
