Funny People & Funny Names: The Funny Name Awards

Funny People is of the most anticipated movie releases of the summer, a story about comedians and what goes on in their lives once they step off-stage.  This got us to thinking -- what about funny names?  Do recent comics and the grand comic masters have funny names?  Or does a name not matter?  Could you imagine that comedian being named anything else?

With these thoughts in mind, we are starting a new kind of award -- The Funny Name Award.  We award it to the names that give us the biggest smiles.  This time around there are only four catergories and clearly this is not an exhaustive listing.  But without further ado...

The August 2009 Funny Name Awards

RECENT GUYS

  • Adam Sandler
  • Jack Black
  • Ben Stiller
  • Will Ferrell

FNA: Jack Black  (Why: Two words and two syllables and they rhyme.)

RECENT GALS

  • Leslie Mann
  • Tina Fey
  • Amy Poehler
  • Maya Rudolph

FNA: Leslie Mann  (Why: Because she's a beautiful woman with a classic first name and her last name is plain old mann.  There's something funny about that "> .)

 THE MASTERS, GENTLEMEN

  • Jim Belushi
  • Chevy Chase
  • Dan Aykroyd
  • Steve Martin

FNA: Chevy Chase  (Why:  A man we can't imagine with any other name.  This name has the double C ring, funny sounds and is exciting to say.)

THE MASTERS, LADIES

  • Lucille Ball
  • Bette Midler
  • Goldie Hawn
  • Lily Tomlin

FNA: Goldie Hawn  (Why: A tough category, but this name wins out.  It's hard to say Goldie with feeling a slight grin and lift to your feet.)

What do you think about our choices?   Did we forget someone crucial?  Miss the true delight of the name Lucille Ball?  Or unfairly overlook Aykroyd?  Opine away.
