It's official. Katherine Heigl is a mom. Last week the actress announced her plans to adopt a little girl from Korea whom she planned to call Naleigh, in tribute to her mother Nancy  and her sister Leigh.

The baby name community was abuzz with chatter about the invented name Naleigh.  As we mentioned here on NameCandy.com last week, Naleigh is freshly invented but sounds familiar, a fresh take on popular names like Haley and Kayleigh (and their variant spellings) and not that far off from the celeb baby name favorite Nala and Nahla, either.

Commentary from the naming community was mixed. But we have more information today.  According to the Jason Heigl Foundation Web siteAccording to Heigl's brother Jason, the baby's name is officially Nancy Leigh, and she will be known by the nickname Naleigh.

So, Name Enthusiasts, what's your take on Nancy Leigh aka Naleigh Kelley?

(And to the keen observer who noted that Leigh Heigl seemed an odd name -- the first name an anagram of the last name --  apparently, Heigl's sister's full name is Margaret Leigh Heigl.  Does that make it better?)

Although Naleigh looks like it might rhyme with Haley and Kayliegh, I'm wondering if it's pronounced as NAA - lee, using the sound of the 'a' in Nancy, the baby's official first name. I think it's cute, particularly since Naleigh was named after her maternal grandmother and Korean adoptee aunt, using the more formal Nancy Leigh as the name on her birth certificate. I read that Naleigh is 10 months old and a special needs child; that's why her new parents were able to adopt her so quickly.

Actually "The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation was founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl in memory of a wonderful son and brother."
