New Baby Alert: Fatboy Slim and Zoe Ball Welcome Daughter Nelly May Lois

Fatboy Slim and wife Zoe Ball welcomed daughter Nelly May Lois into the world on January 14, 2010.  Celebrity Baby Blog reports that Nelly May Lois joins older brother Woody, 8.  This is a family full of interesting names.  While Fatboy Slim is this DJ's performance name, his given name is Norman Cook.  The affect is just a little bit different! What can we tell you about this family of names?

  • from the two elements in Frankish meaning north and man -- so "northman, Norseman."  Originally used to identify a group of Scandinavians who occupied Normandy in the 10th century.  See Namipedia entry on Norman.

  • from the 1940s to 1960s Woody made it into the top 1000 names in the Social Security Administration Rankings.  Highest rank was 678 in the 1940s.  See Woody on Name Voyager.

  • 1880s in the top 1000 names, but not since.  See Name Voyager for Nelly.

  • originally a nickname for Mary and Margaret.  Lately more often associated with the month of May, which in turn comes from Maia -- the Greek mythological goddess of increase.  Often a middle name.  See Namipedia entry on May.

  • a name of uncertain meaning.  Borrows from the Ecclesiastic Greek Lois.  In the bible, Lois is grandmother to Timothy,  companion of St. Paul.  In the 1920s and 1930s was in the top 20 names.  See Namipedia entry  and Name Voyager on Lois.

What do you make of this family of names?  Do they all work together?  How about the three names of the newest addition -- the combination of Nelly May Lois?  All three names have a slightly old fashioned feel to them.  Nelly was popular way over a century ago, and Lois's popularity was in the early 20th century.  And yet they sound of the moment too.  A current trend has what used to be "old lady" names becoming the hippest names around. We predict Norman, or Fatboy Slim if you prefer, and Zoe are on to something and that we will be seeing a rise in Nelly in the future.  Nelly's fun, rooted in the past and has a certain zest to it. Thoughts?

I prefer Nelly as a nickname for Penelope. Friends recently named their daughter Penelope and they like Penny & Nelly for nicknames.

I do prefer Nelly to many celebrity baby names though.

I probably would have switched the middle names around too, preferring the flow of 'Lois May' to 'May Lois'

I really like Nelly for Penelope. And agree with the comment that Lois May has a nice flow to it.

And of course there is the rapper Nelly! Perhaps he's the most famous Nelly these days. His full name is Cornell Haynes Jr.

I also agree that Lois May would have been better than May Lois.

Yea, but Nelly was in the top 25 from 1880-1891; the Top 100 until 1925; #131 in 1935; #210 in 1945; #386 in 1955; #693 in 1965; #888 in 1975; and last on the list in 1979 (#950). It's not surprising that the Nelly version is appearing now, what with Nelly and Nelly Furtado ...

Nelly and Nellie have had different paths. Nellie has more often been in the top 1000 names. Nelly hasn't been there since the 1880s. Check out Name Voyager for Nelly: http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=NELLY&ms=true&sw=f&exact=false
I wonder why the -ie has been more popular than the -y?
