New Baby Alert: Drew Lachey Welcomes Hudson Nicholas
Fame pictures

Dancing With the Stars winner Drew Lachey and his wife chose Hudson Nicholas for the name of their baby, born May 15. Hudson's sister is called Isabella Claire.

Hudson is a name on the hot list, one of last year's names on the move. In three years it leaped a hundred places up to #150, making it the #79th fastest rising name of the year. As we wrote in our post about Greyson, -son names are hot, and Hudson fares well among them. Laura Wattenberg writes that Hudson has "an old-fashioned heft that keeps it from disappering in the current flood of perky surnames. It conjures up the long curves of old Hudson automobiles and the steady flow of the Hudson River. Gruff and reliable."

Maybe that's it. Hudson's been chosen by celebrities from Harvey Keitel to Marcia Gay Harden.

It's also the surname of some folks you may have heard of: Jennifer Hudson, Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson, and let's not forget Rock Hudson. Could this be the secret of Hudson's success?

We'll leave you with this thought: Another rising -son name (only slightly less hot than Rocco) is Bronson. Insert your own Balki Bartokomous joke here.

Do you like Hudson Nicholas?

I really like the name but I immediately think 'celebrity baby', which is unappealing to me.

In 2006 I had a little girl. If she had been a boy we planned to name her Hudson. We like it, but now that its popular wil steer away from it.

Our son, born in 2007, is named Hudson- I am so disappointed that it's become so popular! Definitely not what we intended.

My son is 6 wks old, and named Hudson. I had never heard it around where we are...we chose it because one of the meanings is "son of Richard" and it went well with our other son's name.

Laura Wattenberg produces in which Hudson offers "an old-fashioned heft in which retains it from disappering in the present flood regarding buoyant surnames. That conjures in the long curves regarding old Hudson autos along with the regular circulation with the Hudson River.
