It's a decidedly Italian name for the new baby of Mexican-American actor-dancer-television host Mario Lopez and girlfriend Broadway dancer Courtney Mazza. The couple welcomed their first child yesterday, September 11, 2010. The baby girl is named Gia Francesca Lopez.

The name Gia is typically a nickname for Gianna or Giovanna. But the entire cluster of these names have risen quickly in the U.S. in the past decade. Gia is currently at #722 on the Social Security Administration's list of most popular names, outpacing Giovanna, which dipped in the past year to #780.  Gianna is currentlly ranked #86. (Click here to see a chart chronicling the popularity of names beginning in Gi- from Gina to Gia on NameVoyager).

While this Italian family of names is rising here in the U.S., none of them makes the charts in their native Italy. Francesca, on the other hand, is currently the sixth most popular name in Italy but ranks #491 here in the U.S.

What do you think of the name Gia Francesca?

It's kind of a logical extension of "Mia." Its interesting that Gia doesn't rank in many other countries. Matt Damon and his wife also chose it.

Remember when Mario Lopez asked Twitter to name his baby? Francesca was the most-suggested name for him! I can't remember if Gia was suggested or not.

Gee, Lane, I completely forgot about the Mario Lopez Twitter story -- you can revisit it here... http://www.namecandy.com/celebrity-baby-names/blog/2010/07/19/would-you-let-twitter-name-your-baby

Funny how they said they were seeking a name that reflected their Mexican and Italian heritage... I think this name comes up short on the Mexican.

The first and middle names might be Italian, but the last name is all Mexican.
