Good-Time Charlie

Previously, we wrote about the antics of "good-time" Charlie Sheen.  But what is a Good Time Charlie anyway?

The origin of the term is not entirely clear, but it's first major use seems to have been in the 1920s, possibly by writer Damon Runyon whose colorful storytelling went on to inform generations of American popular culture -- most famously perhaps in the form of the 1932 musical Guys and Dolls.  Runyon wrote of "Good Time Charlie's Speakeasy."

The term caught on has had a life as a 1927 film, a few different country songs, a band name, a restaurant name, a moniker for bon vivant politician Charlie Wilson, as well as a fictionalized 17-th Century French prince who surrounded himself with courtesans the the 1970s musical called Good Time Charley.

Boozing and whoring, this is the stuff Good Time Charlies are made of.  Congratulations, Charlie Sheen, you've definitely earned the title!

My grandpa Charlie was a bootlegger to the Hollywood stars, and family lore has it that the term came from him.

I have been watching a DVD of Three Stooges shorts filmed in 1935. In "Uncivil Warriors" Larry, Moe and Curly are posing as spies who are stopped at a guardpost. Curly tells the guard they are looking for 'Charlie - Good Time Charlie' who walks like this. And the three do a silly walk away from the guard. Later a guard comes up to them and says 'I hear you been looking for me.' 'who are you?' 'Charlie - Good Time Charlie and I walk like this.' (silly walk) 'No the Charlie we want walks like this.' (different silly walk) I would like to know the origin of Good Time Charlie's silly walk. Does anyone have a source for that usage and visual?
