St. Patrick's Day Baby Names: Top Ten Green Baby Names
Flickr cc/ wrote

Color names are always a popular conversation here at Name Candy. Scarlett and Violet, Clementine and Blue are favorites among namers and celebrities alike. But we've noticed that one color isn't as well-loved by namers these days. For names, can it be it isn't easy meaning green?

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, get your green on with our top 10 Green Baby Name suggestions.

1 and 2. Sage and Olive. Celebrities inspire. Take a page from brand-new parents Kyra Phillips and John Roberts, who named their girl-twin Sage. (Toni Collette also has a Sage. ) And while Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen have lately had our attention for their newest daughter's name (Elula Lottie Miriam Cohen), their first daughter has a sweet green name, Olive.

3, 4, and 5. Esmeralda, Teal, Cyan. when Ben Stiller's flick Greenberg, came out, we noted that Orange, Green, Brown and both Pink and Pinkie once made the US popularity charts. Now Sienna and Violet fly high, while Green names aren't anywhere near the charts. A commenter reminded us that Esmeralda is popular in Argentina, while Emerald, Cyan and Teal had all been spotted by commenters on babies. (Teal on both girls and boys.)

6. Greenlee: Also spelled Greenley or Greenleigh, this cute chart-climber was a character name on the soap opera, All My Children, but still flies under the radar of most namers. First Runner up, Green Soap Opera Baby Name: Cricket.

7. and 8. Sylvia, Jade  In his movie, "For Colored Girls," Tyler Perry used the name Juanita to signify the Woman in Green. You suggested instead: Kelly, Sylvia, Jade, Viridian.

9. Viridis: A Namipedia user contends that this name was "popular among the Italian Renaissance aristocracy," and that the name means "green, verdant, plentiful, lush, fecund." We think it combines the fashion for word names with the trend of flower names like Violet and Iris.

10. Canopy: When is a green name not a color name? When it's an eco-name, of course! While earth-loving parents often choose names with an eastern or hippy vibe, it was our ever-popular "Glee & The Best Baby Name of All Time" post that garnered our favorite eco-name suggestion.  Commenter Carol noted, "Ecology friendly is in, should make for some GREAT Green names," before suggesting the eco-friendly (and leafy-green) Canopy. And how about Hammock?

What do you think of our green names? And what are your favorite green names?

I know a first grader named Sage. I think I like Clover the best though. Its not really my style, but the name "Chloris" means green in Greek. (think of chlorophyl, the stuff that makes plants green.) At first I thought it was terrible, but if you think of it as a fresh take on a name like Doris, its not so bad.

Well, it may be a fresh take, not sure if it is a pleasant take on the dated Doris.

I just came across a green name that I can't believe we missed, it seems so obvious! Kelly. (I mean really, I came up with Chloris before I came up with Kelly?) My cousin was born on St. Patrick's Day and her name is Kelly.
Also, what about Fern? It makes me think of Charlotte's Web, but that's not necessarily bad.

My oldest daughter's name is Clover Jain, followed by Sage Lou, Brynden Ann, and Violet Greys and Finley Joseph, my twins. People ask me if my husband and I planned "Clover, Sage, and Violet". We didn't. If we did, maybe we would've given Brynden and Finley 'color' names, too, like Teal and Canopy!
