Mariah Carey's Baby Names: Monroe & Moroccan

Mariah Carey's Baby Names: Monroe & Moroccan
Fame Pictures

Mariah Carey's twins are named Monroe and Moroccan Scott Cannon, the singer has revealed on Twitter. And guess what? We called it.

Monroe isn't a surprise. Not only does the name perfectly match current celebrity trends (See: Jason Schwarzmann's infant daughter Marlowe), it also honors Mariah Carey's love of Marilyn Monroe. As for Moroccan? This fits celebrity trends, too. Last year, Alicia Keyes chose Egypt for her son. Earlier this year, Mike Tyson actually chose Morocco

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon chose the adjective form Moroccan to invoke the "top-tier of Carey's New York City apartment, which features Moroccan-inspired decor and was also the site of Cannon's marriage proposal." So it's sort of a place name. And as one of our bloggers pointed out, he can always go by the celeb-friendly nickname, Rocco.

Making Us Wait

Carey did a sort of striptease on Twitter beginning yesterday morning, revealing just a hint of dem babies' names -- both start with "M." Before the big unveiling of her newborn twins' names, did any of her Twitter fans want to guess?

They did. Guesses whipped around the Twitterverse and through the blogosphere, as people became increasingly frenzied in advance of the big reveal. The Carey-Cannon twin names are possibly the most anticipated celebrity baby names of this packed 2011 summer Celebrity Baby Name Season, and fans have been waiting since December to find out what names Nick and Mariah had picked. Today's guesses for Mariah and Nick Cannon's boy-girl twins included Mike & Miah, Martin & Martina, Matthew & Marissa, Michael & Maria, Mimi, Maisy, Melody & Max, Monica & Morris, Marvin & Melissa, Margaret & Matteo, Mario, Marianna, Miracle, Michael, Marilyn.

As for that last, Mariah reportedly loves Marilyn Monroe, so many fans thought she might honor the star with a baby name. Personally, we thought the girl might be named Monroe. After all, recycled celebrity surnames are one of Hollywood's hottest trends. Guesses from NameCandy commenters included Milan and McGuire.

Looks like our guess was right! Read more M & M sibset ideas in the comments to "Will Mariah Carey's choice make M names cool again?"

M&Ms and Celebrity Twins

Interestingly, Mariah's aren't the first M&M twins this year. Last month, Peyton Manning and his wife also welcomed a girl-boy pair, daughter Mosley Manning and son Marshall Manning. Our commenters were not, on the whole, impressed, although props were given to the nickname Mo for a woman. Fellow diva songstress Jennifer Lopez almost has an M & M twinset in son Max and daughter Emme Maribel.

Neal Patrick Harris might be the celebrity parent whose twin names have gotten the most raves. Girl-boy pair Harper and Gideon were born last year to universal name acclaim.

What do you think of Mariah's twin names, Monroe and Moroccan? What do you think of the nicknames Roc and Roe? And was it worth the wait?

I can't say I'm shocked, but what a set of barftastic names. Moroccan is a nationality not a name for a child. Monroe sounds like a little boy too.

I like Monroe but it makes me think of a boy because I associate it with the US's 5th President. Of course names that work for a boy or a girl are very popular.

So a girl named Monroe and a boy named Moroccan? Weird! Would have thought something closer to Martha and Marshall.

Don't like either of them.

Morocco and Marilyn would have been better.

Hm... I just realized that his name is Moroccan Canon. Surely he'll have a nickname.

Monroe is okay. I've heard it used as a given name before, though never on a girl. It's in the same vein as Harlow now, I guess. Honestly, when I saw the name Moroccan I thought it was a typo that meant to say Morocco (which would have been a slightly better choice IMO).

Poor little Moroccan is set up for some "whose on first" type conversations.

What's your name?
Oh, how interesting. I don't know any Moroccan names. What is it?

I heard on the radio the boy's name is Moroccan Scott Cannon. The girl has no middle name "like her mother".

I like Roc and Roe for nicknames(sounds like "rock and roll") when said quickly! fostering their musical heritage. Marilyn would be a kinder girl's name than Monroe. Morocco would be a better first name than Moroccan.

You KNOW a name is bad when people are saying Morocco would have been a better choice!

Everyone has their own choice but generally making name from father's and Mother's name combination is trendy.
