Justin Bieber "Baby" Name: Tristyn/Tristan in the Spotlight

Justin Bieber "Baby" Name: Tristyn/Tristan in the Spotlight
Justin Bieber Wax Figure (Target/Fame Pictures)

Allegations broke this week that The Bieb had fathered a child in an encounter with a fan. We're not touching that allegation with a ten foot pole, but here's what we do want to comment on: the name. The potential baby Bieber, 3 months old, bears the name Tristyn Anthony Markhouse Yeater. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's newest grandchild, born last month, is Tristan Milos Trump.

This is a versatile name. Here's why: Tristan, from the Gaelic by way of Old French, is a little bit "drest" (Gaelic: tumult, riot) and a little bit "triste" (French: sad). The legendary Tristan was a Knight of the Round Table, a star-crossed lover who accidentally drank a love potion with Isolde, the chick he was supposed to be chivalrously fetching home from Ireland in order to marry the king. As a result, Tristan and Isolde fell in love themselves. The legendary Brad Pitt was a star-crossed Tristan Legends of the Fall, where Tristan is the beautiful wild card next to his brothers' studious Alfred and lovable Samuel. Both Tristans are a little bit tumultous, a little bit sad.

Tristan is the perfect emo name; its legend oozes glamorous angst. At the same time, it's tough, and can basically wrestle a grizzly bear survive at an age when Justin Bieber was a preteen busker. And also, Tristan sounds posh. Tristan has risen quickly and was #80 on the charts in 2010.

Mariah Yeater's spelling variation, Tristyn, has never made the charts (although these variations have: Tristen, Tristian, Tristin, Triston, Trystan, and for girls, Trista and -- yes -- Tristen). Instead, Mariah chose the unusual spelling Tristyn. Could this possibly be a subtle reference to another alternate spelling she could have chosen? Does Tristyn make you think of Trystin, as in I was tryst-in' with The Bieb in The Bathroom. Maybe it is a subtle message name?

Oh and P.S. on Justin Bieber: he has strongly declared on the record that he is not, as media outlets including us recently reported, a new dog-father. We stand corrected. The puppy Baylor was adopted by Selena Gomez, not by Justin Bieber.

What do you think of the name Tristan? Do you like Mariah Yeater's variation, Tristyn?

I like the name Tristan because of the original love story and also just because I think it has a nice sound.

Tristyn has a different sound to me and looks awful. It sounds and reads like a name made up by someone who would get pregnant from a one night stand....

Tristan is a good name for a boy. I would assume from the spelling that Tristyn was a girl. The -yn spelling to me denotes a girl. I know 2 Madisyn's that are girls, one Madison that is a boy. I also have a cousin named Emerson who is a boy and know of a baby girl Emersyn.

Tristan for me is forever associated with Tristan Farnon in James Herriot's books (and later the BBC series) All Creatures Great and Small. As a 13 year old I was madly in love with dissolute vet student Tristan, played by Peter Davison.

His older brother was called Siegfried, which never quite had the same romantic ring to it!

She should have spelled it Trystin...more like Justin, if he's the father...
