Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill and Wife Lily Aldridge Choose a Southern Name for Their New Southern Belle

Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill and Wife Lily Aldridge Choose a Southern Name for Their New Southern Belle
Fame/Flynet

Kings of Leon band member Caleb Followill and wife, Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge, welcomed their first child yesterday. They named the little girl Dixie Pearl Followill

Dixie comes from the nickname for the southern U.S. and according to Nameipedia, was popularized as a name in the 19th century due to the song I Wish I Was in Dixie. The name remained popular until the 1980s and had its peak in the 1930s. After several decades off the chart, Dixie is beginning to make a comeback, slowly rising over the past few years. It is currently ranked at No. 846.

The name makes sense for Followill, not just because it was popularized by a song. Followill was born and raised in the land of Dixie. He and his brothers were raised in Oklahoma and his new daughter, like his band Kings of Leon, was born in Nashville. Aldridge, on the other hand, was raised in California.

Pearl followed a similar pattern to Dixie. In the top 50 girls names until the 1910s, Pearl took a deep dive and fell off the charts twenty years ago. Like Dixie, it has also started to make a slight comeback, now ranked at No. 814.

What do you think of the name Dixie Pearl? What other "Southern" names do you like?

I'm a big fan of southern belle names, especially having grown up in Oklahoma myself. Our two girls are Georgia Marie and Scarlett Caroline :)

Funny, while I think Oklahoma kind of belongs in "the South" (as does Texas) I don't think of OK at all as part of "Dixie" (or TX)- that, to me, is reserved for the Deep South. Very different in my view (I say this having lived in Texas and spent quite a bit of time in Oklahoma, and also some in the true Deep South.)

I like the name just fine, it has kind of a 1920s feel to me. Neither name is absolutely "out there" while having enough of an individual edge to appeal to celebrities. Well-chosen IMO. :)

I agree with Anne who said that Dixie is the Deep South. This from someone who has lived in Texas and South Carolina!

I love the name Dixie Pearl.
