Royal Name Game: Predictions for Will and Kate

Royal Name Game: Predictions for Will and Kate

You think YOUR in-laws are opinionated about baby names? Try pleasing the whole House of Windsor.

The palace has confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child. That means it’s time to start guessing what names might make the royal short list. No matter what names a young Kate Middleton might once have dreamed of, it's a safe bet that the heir to the throne will bear a name (or four) plucked straight from the royal lineage.

The past 1000 years have seen 66 British monarchs and only 30 names.  Despite all the modernization the monarchy has dealt with lately, we think they’ll stick with the tried and true. Tradition is the lifeblood of the monarchy. That doesn't mean the new parents necessarily have to buck fashion, though. The England and Wales name popularity charts boast some formal and throwback names that would sound pretty sweet with a HRH in front of them. Their current top 10:

1

HARRY

AMELIA

2

OLIVER

OLIVIA

3

JACK

LILY

4

ALFIE

JESSICA

5

CHARLIE

EMILY

6

THOMAS

SOPHIE

7

JACOB

RUBY

8

JAMES

GRACE

9

JOSHUA

AVA

10

WILLIAM

ISABELLA

A litte further down the rankings you'll find even more regal options. Our own Laura Wattenberg points out that many of the kingly names that sound unfashionable in the U.S. are more current in the U.K. She points to names found among the current princes' middle names, like Arthur (ranked #68 in England and Wales) and George (#12), as strong possibilities. And don't rule out a namesake for Great-Grandpa Philip, or a pure, simple classic like John.

If you're looking for pure numerical pedigree, the most common names of past Kings are Edward, Henry, James and George. All but George are currently borne by other members of the royal family. For a twist, a girl -- and remember, males no longer get precedence in the order of succession -- could receive a feminized version of one of those kingly classics, like Georgia or Henrietta. But the expectant parents' options are wider for girls. Attractive royal names not used in the current generations include Alexandra, Alice, Charlotte, Helena and Victoria.

Of course, a royal baby can expect a long name, filled with family tributes. With their many middle names, the royal grandmother, great grandmother and great aunts and great-great uncles offer a plethora of name choices that get royal approval: The Queen Mother Elizabeth Angela Marguerite or Princess Margaret Rose may inspire, and the Queen herself has the middle names Alexandra and Mary. Mary has been twice used as a monarch’s name. Alexandra would be a brand new entry to the throne. Despite being currently in use, Elizabeth may be on the list since it is also Princess Kate’s middle name. And in terms of a girl's tribute name, there's no more obvious choice than Diana. We'd be surprised to see that choice for a girl's first name, but definitely look for Diana among the middle names.

What do you think Will and Kate will name their firstborn? And why don't you share your best picks of classic or trendy names you like for them.

Girl's name: Alexandra (not just because it's my name; it's modern, classic & a nod to Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, reigning queen)
Boy's name: Edmund Spencer (variation of the popular name Edward, Edmund was the name of a king & "mund" is an uncommon, but traditional ending to a modern name; Spencer as a nod to Diana)

I think this modern royal couple will honor Windsor tradition while also honoring the baby's grandmother Princess Diana. I'm thinking for a girl Mary Diana. A boy is harder but I think it will include Spencer. We know from the use of his mother's engagement ring that this young Prince remembers his mother, and her legacy always even as his daily life means filling responsibility inherited from his father's side of the family.

I REALLY, REALLY hope that they use Diana as a middle name. I'd love to see something like: Sophie Diana Grace Elizabeth

My guesses are
Boy: George Arthur Philip Charles
Girl: Elizabeth Victoria Diana... Caroline? Charlotte? Marguerite?

For a boy, I think they'll choose a name they like for the first name that's also from the royal lineage. George seems reasonable and it would be after the queen's father. Arthur is part of Prince William's, Prince Charles's, and King George VI's names in addition to being popular. I think Philip is likely to make it in as a nod to both Prince Philip and Pippa Middleton. If they're thinking of etymology, Charles could be after Kate's mother Carole Middleton in addition to Prince Charles.

For a girl, I think Elizabeth is the obvious choice after the Queen, the Queen Mother, and Duchess Catherine. In addition, if this baby is a girl, they may like the idea of her being Queen Elizabeth III. Victoria seems popular with descendants of Queen Victoria. I hope Diana makes it into the name although I have to wonder if there are some family issues with that. Caroline or Charlotte would honor Prince Charles & Carole Middleton or Marguerite flows nicely and would honor the Queen Mother.

As far as I know, the British royal family tries not to name their boys John. Because of John Lackland. So that's pretty much out.

Boy: George Arthur Francis James or George Arthur Philip James

Girl: Charlotte Frances Elizabeth Alexandra or Charlotte Frances Elizabeth Philippa. Or swap the Frances for Diana and the Elizabeth/Alexandra for Victoria.

Princess Diana's middle name was Frances after her own mother; Kate's father's middle name is Francis. James is one of Prince Harry's names, as well as Kate's brother. Charlotte and Caroline both have royal precedent and would honour both Prince Charles and Kate's mother Carole without being too matchy in the family. Philip/Philippa for her sister and his grandfather...these two have a lot of family names in common!

My name predictions for the Royal Baby:

Boy: Richard Charles William George
"King Richard"
Preceding this king will be a King Charles and King William.

Girl: Mary Elizabeth Diana Victoria
"Queen Mary"

This baby will hold the name of the monarch so its unlikely that names without a history will be chosen. Queen Elizabeth will no doubt have a say in this.

I'm going to go with Alice Diana Caroline Elizabeth for a girl and Arthur Spencer Michael Philip for a boy.

Diana and Spencer after his mother.
Caroline after her mother Carole.
Elizabeth after his grandmother.
Michael after her father.
Philip after his grandfather.

Alice and Arthur both have regal connections but haven't been used for some time, yet both are 'normal'. They will definitely honour Diana in some way but Diana as a name wouldn't be regal enough for the future queen, so it will more likely be a middle name.

Princess Alice
Prince Arthur

Jane Elizabeth Charlotte

Any of those names, in any order, are lovely.

The boy names are more stuffy, with the exception of James.
