New Baby Alert: A Presidential Name for Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's New Daughter

New Baby Alert: A Presidential Name for Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's New Daughter
Fame/Flynet

It's a baby girl Lincoln for actors Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard! The couple welcomed their first child this week, naming her Lincoln Bell Shepard, just in time for the DVD release of the Academy Award-nominated movie of the same name.

We wrote about the name back in November when the film was released in theaters. It is certainly a popular name, but so far, only for boys. Skyrocketing over the past decade, Lincoln now sits at No. 178 and is part of the trend of presidential baby names.

As naming expert Laura Wattenberg explains, "Lincoln is one of the fastest rising names for boys, part of the presidential name boom that includes names like Madison, Jackson, Kennedy, Carter, and Reagan. It's rare for girls, though, since it doesn't resemble familiar female names in any of its forms. Madison shortens to Maddie, Reagan resembles Megan, Kennedy follows the popular rhythm of Emily and Natalie, but Lincoln has a more compact, masculine sound."

However, as we saw last year, using traditionally masiculine names for girls has become quite the celebrity baby name trend with two baby girl Maxwells, an Elliotte and a female Wyatt, just in 2012. Bell's and Shepard's new addition is another to add to the list.

We also wonder what nickname the couple will be. Linc is common, but doesn't have a very feminine feel to it. Perhaps they will go with Lin.

What do you think of the name Linocln for a girl? What other presidential names do you like? Which ones work for girls?

I'm sick of all these boy names being turned into girl names.

I like the nickname "Connie" for a girl named "Lincoln". While is it is generally a short form of Constance, it has an old-fashioned charm to it...

That is not a name for a little girl. I am not surprided, At least they didn't name her Pineapple or Voyager Instructor.

Hmm... I'm wondering if this name has something to do with his dad? I'm hoping, since I can't imagine any other reason for calling a daughter Lincoln.

What is it, exactly, that makes people say Lincoln is a "boy's" name, other than tradition? We don't have gendered surnames in English--a girl born into the Lincoln family will bear that name just as a boy born into the family would. So why not as a given name? I think it's fresh and spunky and will work just fine for little Miss Shepard. (And since Dad is named Dax, no one can really argue that they haven't thought through the consequences of an unusual choice!)

"Lin" sounds like a very traditional girl's name to me!

I love the idea of nn Link -- super cute! I think this surname name is more female-suitable than something ending in -son. A good alternative to Emerson, for example.

I guess Dax will drive Lincoln around in his '67 Lincoln. Maybe the car was an influence?

I think Linny could be sweet, or Lin, though I do hate boy names turned into girl names.
