Actors Rachel Leigh Cook and Daniel Gillies, who welcomed a baby girl on September 28, have now announced the baby's name.  According to a report in US Weekly, the baby girl is named Charlotte Easton

Charlotte is a classic name that has remained in the top-1000 names in the United States as long as the Social Security Administration has been tracking name popularity.  Take a closer look at the geographic trends however, and you'll notice that  the name Charlotte has travelled a curious path. Long a distinctively Southern name, Charlotte took a decidedly Northern turn with the television arrival of Charlotte York, the character played by Kristen Davis on Sex and the City, beginning in 1998.

Celebrities including Harry Connick Jr., Dylan McDermott and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze have named their daughters Charlotte in the years since, and if you look at the naming maps for the name Charlotte today, you'll notice it's popular everywhere EXCEPT the South.

Baby Charlotte's middle name Easton, comes from another direction altogether. Easton falls into a category Baby Name Wizard's Laura Wattenberg calls "Preppy Cowboys."  These names have a country western flair, tinged with a dash of preppiness.  (Bentley, the fastest-rising boys' name of 2010 falls into this category, as does Brantley.) And while Easton has been skyrocketing for boys this decade, it has yet to break the top-1000 for girls.  Could this new baby signal the watershed moment for Easton as a girl's name? Our Celebrity Names Database now carries two entries for girls named Easton and only one for boys.

What do you think of the name Charlotte Easton?  Are you surprised by the geographic and gender-bending aspects of this new baby name?

My nephew born this year is named Easton. I think it does fit as a boy name, plus, I've tripped over a lot of Easton sporting equipment left around from my brothers... maybe that has influenced my thinking? (Easton makes baseball, slow, fast pitch and hockey equipment.)
