Love! Valor! Compassion!  There's some of each when it comes to actor Emile Hirsch's new baby boy. The baby's unnamed mother met Hirsch at an Oscar party, according a report in PEOPLE.  And though it seems their love connection was but fleeting, the parents intend to raise their baby, who is named Valor, together.

We're as impressed with the compassion and maturity this duo is showing regarding the raising of their child as we are with their unusual - and stylish - baby name.

Valor is a virtue name derived from the word meaning courage. Namipedia users suggest like names such as Promise, True and Faith as viable sibling names for Valor .   BabyNameWizard.com's Laura Wattenberg says, "Valor is bold and swashbuckling but sophisticated, too, because it's such a formal word."

Given the name Valor's heroic ring, it's not surprising that DC Comics has featured a character named Valor in some of its story lines. While today's adventurous parents might appreciate Valor as a strong meaning name with a fresh sound, some might be put off by its obvious nickname, Val.  Although Val has a history as a boys' name in the U.S. -- it was solidly in the top-1000 for three decades from the 1920s-1960s and Val Kilmer has certainly lent the name macho swagger -- it is far better known as a nickname for the girls' name Valerie.

What do you think? Is the name Valor heroic or does it risk being girly?

Ha - I've considered Valo(u)r as a name before; it seems to be in the same vein of meaning and even style as Victor but less common. It does seem like Valor is the masculine counterpart to Valerie (cf. name pairs such as Eugene/Eugenie, Stephan/Stephanie) even if spelling and origin are different.

As an aside, why does this blog get so many spam comments?!
