Baby Kutcher has arrived!  Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis welcomed a beautiful baby girl on October 1, 2014.  News spread like wildfire about the arrival of their baby girl, but name details were just released today, in a very interesting way!  Ashton posted on Facebook a link to his blog, saying "Here's your baby photo. Well, one of them is. Now can the helicopter please stop hovering over our house, there is a baby sleeping inside! And she's super cute."

In that link was not only several pictures of a few beautiful babies (and some cute animals), but we learned that baby Kutcher's full name is Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher.  As everyone knows, Wyatt is traditionally a boys name (in fact, Baby Name Wizard's entry for Wyatt says the name means "little guy").  However, there has been a recent trend of traditionally boys names being used on girls, with one of the best known instances being Jessica Simpson's decision to name her daughter Maxwell.  There's even another baby girl Wyatt in the celebrity names database, Wyatt Lilly Hahn, daughter of actress Rachel Uchitel.

The issue of names and gender is nothing new.  There are dozens of names that fall squarely on the middle of the gender equation (Jordan and Taylor come to mind).  As parents look for more ways to be unique in their naming, the trend of once solidly "boys" names being used on girls might continue.  While we know that names that were once only heard of as boys names have shifted into names that people primarily identify with girls (see Lindsay for an example), we're curious to see if names like Wyatt or Maxwell will have a similar gender shift.

Do you think the name Wyatt will become more popular as a girls name? Are there other examples of names you would view as solidly male names that have the potential to increase in usage among girl names?

I don't like it at all. Maybe she'll go by her middle name...

Sorry...that's a total boy name. Nice try, but she's gonna hate it. Stop stealing boy names for girls!!

As bad as Lincoln and Maxwell and Jagger Joseph for a girl.

We named our daughter Ridley. A male name in British circles, but arguably more female-sounding to American ears.
