Beyond St. Patrick - Saint Names, Extreme Edition

Time was, Irish-American saintly baby naming was a piece of cake. Thousands of boys were named after St. Patrick every year, with a special boost each March 17th. Today, though, parents are all on the hunt for something new. Little Aidans now outpace Patricks by a mile, and Declans are rising fast.

No worries, though: Aidan and Declan are saintly Irish names themselves. That's rock-solid, right? You can't go wrong with a saint's name. Or can you? Judge for yourself...

So this year on St. Patrick's Day, take a moment to appreciate the fine name St. Patrick left us. And if your baby happens to be born on December 5, celebrate St. Mucus Day by naming your son after somebody, anybody else.

Since saint names come from all over the world and all different time periods, there are many funny saint names, and many wonderful ones! With thousands upon thousands of names, there is a lot to choose from. I think that Patrick is a great name, and it is sad that it is in decline. Here is my list of some of the more unique saint names that may actually be usable in today's time.

Girls:
Perpetua
Felicity
Bernadette
Gianna
Kateri
Edith
Delphina
Hyacinth (a male saint, but a better name for girl today!)
Faustina
Jacinta (Blessed)
Zita

Boys:
Leander
Isidore
Solanus (Venerable)
Sebastian
Urban
Maximilian
Ignatius
Giles
Blaise (or Blase)
Augustine
Benedict
Aloysius

Like I said, there are thousands upon thousands of saints, so this isn't even the tip of the iceberg!
